# [[Access Control]]

Access Control is the general term for enforcing [[Security]] on resources on a network. It is usually composed of two parts:
- [[Authentication]] verifies the identity of an actor (checks whether they are who they say they are)
- [[Authorization]] determines whether the actor has the appropriate permissions to access a resource on the network
Authentication must be done before authorization. Sometimes the two are linked, but often they are done by two separate components.
Authorization is often set and inforced using [[Identity Access Management]] policies.
