%% date:: [[2022-09-28]], [[2023-01-04]] %% # [[Basic Fantasy]] [site](https://www.basicfantasy.org/) Basic Fantasy is a [[Tabletop Roleplaying Games|TTRPG]] that is rules-light modelled on the classic RPGs in the 80s. It is an [[Old School Revival|OSR]] game, and along with [[OSRIC]] is one of the first retro clones ever. ## Rules - Randomly rolled ability scores, then choose your class and race accordingly. - Distinction between class and race. - There are limitations as to which class each race can be. - The main ability associated with each class is called the Prime Requisite. - Attack rolls are based on a d20, and you have to meet or beat your opponent's AC. - Saving throws are with a d20. You have to meet or beat your saving throw number, but saving throw bonuses add _to the number rolled_. - Skills are with a d100, and you have to roll under your skill score. - Initiatve is rolled with a d6 and is based on whether the monsters go first or the PCs. - Multiclassing is called "combination class" and it means that your character progresses more slowly than others. - Character progression is tracked per character and differs by class. - There are rules for retainers, mercenaries, and strongholds. - Ascending armor class. - There are only four core classes: cleric, thief, magic-user, and fighter. There are community supplements that add more subclasses. - There are multiple types of saves, named after specific effects like _dragon breath_, even though that save is used for more types of effects or abilities than just dragon breath. - Dexterity or strength may be used to attack, but only strength is used to hit with both melee and ranged weapons. ## Opinions - Really don't like the limitations with regards to class and the minimum ability score requirements per race. It feels limiting. - Fighters are very basic. There's an optional combat specialization that gives them a bonus to attack with certain weapons, but that's it. - The rulebook is laid out in a frustratingly counterintuitive way. You get the full list of all spells before you even get to how combat works! - The fact that you use many types of dice to roll for different things is really arbitrary. - It kind of seems like every other [[Old School Revival|OSR]] game. Generic fantasy, nothing new here. ## My games of Basic Fantasy - [[ttrpgs/Return of the Green Death/World|Return of the Green Death]] ## Related resources - [[Basic Fantasy Character Sheet]] -
