# Chaos Monkey
A tool that [[Netflix]] developed, and later open-sourced. It randomly shuts down an EC2 instance in your stack.
The goal of chaos monkey is to see how your application responds and ideally recovers from such an outage.
According to [[Tammy Bryant]] in [this talk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOTk-wRrdZ0&ab_channel=Gremlin), [[National Australia Bank]] was the first bank in the world to practice [[Chaos Engineering]] as defined by [[Netflix]], with Chaos Monkey.
Chaos Monkey is integrated with [[Spinnaker]], which can make it a little fiddly to install. It works with [[AWS]], [[Google Kubernetes Engine|GKE]], [[Microsoft Azure]], [[Kubernetes]], and [[Cloud Foundry]]. [^marmer]
