# [[Competitive research]]
Competitive research is part of [[Product]] strategy, but also informs [[Marketing]] activities. It involves looking at your "competitors" in a certain niche with the goal of determining:
- What they're doing well
- What they're not doing well that you could capitalize on
- How you could add value to what's already out there
- What language they're using to get people's attention
"Competitors" is a strong word, but remember that [[A rising tide lifts all boats]]. Competitive research is about improving what YOU are doing, not about putting everyone else down. Be a decent human being!
Also, be careful about comparing yourself to others. Be inspired, not daunted.
