# [[Consensual Nonmonogamy]]

Consensual nonmonogamy (CNM) is a relationship style where involved parties agree to leave room for multiple intimate relationships. CNM is different from [[Infidelity]] in that [[Consent]] is actively solicited and boundaries are [[Communication|communicated]] continuously. It is also called "Ethical Non-Monogamy".
## Forms of Consensual Nonmonogamy
### More casual
- [[Swinging]] involves an existing couple having sex with (an)other couple(s) as a group.
- In an [[Open Relationship]], one or both parties are permitted to seek intimacy outside the relationship. Usually, open relationships are focused on physical/sexual intimacy, with a tacit agreement to avoid emotional entanglements.
- [[Monogamish]] means being mostly monogamous, but with one or both parties occasionally enjoying a brief fling.
### More serious
- [[Polyamory]] involves having multiple intimate, potentially long-term, relationships. Polyamory is less about casual sex than real connections, although it includes both.
- [[Polygamy]] (polygyny/polyandry) is specifically about marriages to more than one person. It's often seen as related to polyamory, but the focus is on the structure of marriage rather than loving multiple people. It also comes with negative connotations due to its religious origins.
### Hybrid
- [[Relationship Anarchy]] is a form of relating that eschews predetermined labels and scripts and includes both casual and serious relationships, as well as leaving room for non-romantic connections like deep friendships.
