# [[Creating customer personas]]
In [[Marketing]], creating [[Customer Personas]] takes time and effort. Below are some ways to help you identify the personas your brand might attract and which ones you should target.
## Customer characteristics
The more detailed the picture you have of your ideal customer, the better. For starters, you can think about their characteristics:
- Age
- Gender
- Interests (within your industry and outside of it)
- Main pain points and challenges
- Aspirations
- How they speak

## What if you don't know who your audience will be?
- Use yourself, but a few years ago. [^ptya] Make your target audience someone who had the same problems that a younger you had.
- Choose someone you know and tailor content specifically to them.
- Engage in online communities. Do searches for online forums, Slack channels, and other groups that your ideal users might hang out in. Participate in those conversations and listen to what their pain points are. Make sure you have answers for those pain points.
