Docker is a tool for packaging up application components into [[Containerization|containers]] and executing them. Docker containers are instances of those components created from a definition called an image.

## Running a Docker container
There are two ways to run a container using Docker.
- [[CLI]]: Docker has a CLI that lets you do a `docker run` to execute a container based on an image. This is the simplest way to run a container, but it requires manual intervention and is usually not the best approach for production environments.
- [[Docker Compose]] is a tool that lets you configure the container [[Declarative|declaratively]], using [[YAML]] files. This applies [[Infrastructure as code]] principles and is better suited for production.
