The most basic level of testing involves following instructions and recording results. Good testers take it a step further and begin to think critically about which results matter more in terms of severity and priority, whether the results could have been false negatives or positives, and whether there are other test cases that might also bring about the incorrect outcome. However, this step up is still playing very much within the box.
Excellent testers, though, seek to redefine the box. They question the requirements that exist, seek to understand what they mean in certain contexts, and raise defects for requirements that do not exist and should. This type of tester operates at a higher level, where they can better understand and champion the end user experience.
