# [[Idempotency]]

Idempotency is the property of an operation of being able to be executed multiple times and still generate a result identical to being executed once.
For example, toggling a light switch is not idempotent, because toggling it once will turn a light off and toggling it again will turn it on. However, deleting a file should usually be idempotent: attempting to delete a file will do nothing because the file has already been deleted.
In [[GitOps]] and [[Kubernetes]], idempotency usually means that applying the same configuration more than once doesn't change the system state. [This issue](https://github.com/grafana/loki/issues/12032) in the [[Grafana Loki]] repository is an example of an idempotency problem: it talks about how the [[Helm for Kubernetes|Helm]] implementation of [[htpasswd]] uses a random salt for the password every time. While that randomness is a feature in terms of [[Information Security|Security]], tools like [[ArgoCD]] and [[Flux]] view it as a drift.
