# [[Impostor Syndrome]] The Impostor Syndrome is the [[Cognitive Biases|cognitive bias]] characterized by a strong conviction that one is not worthy of praise or recognition as well as by an overwhelming shame that others might find out the one is a fraud. ![[workchronicles-impostor-syndrome.png]] [^workchronicles] ## How to fight against impostor syndrome - [[Growth mindset|Adopt a growth mindset]]. Instead of talking about yourself as an expert, show what you've done and how you've learned what you know. Emphasise the [[Learning]] [[Focus on the process, not the results|process]] over what the results may or may not say about what you _are_. - [[Learning in public|Learn in public]]. Instead of thinking of public work as being necessarily "finished", produce content early, especially content that is unfinished, with the goal of improving it with feedback. - [[Wear your noobiness on your sleeve]]. Proclaim that you're new to this with pride, and don't bother pretending that you're an expert. - [[Be a guide, not a guru]]. Recognize that a guide who is only a few steps ahead of someone still knows the way better than that person. You don't have to be a guru to give useful advice-- nor do you have to pretend to be one. ## My videos on impostor syndrome Here's one with [[Marie Cruz]] and [[Sophie Küster]] about how to combat impostor syndrome: ![](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOHjfiTkgD0) And here's one with [[Marie Cruz]] and [[Linda van de Vooren]] about how having a [[Growth mindset]] instead of a fixed one can help with impostor syndrome. ![](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMqaMTJBKrY) [^workchronicles]: Work Chronicles. https://workchronicles.com
