%% date:: [[2022-10-09]] %% # [[Into the Odd]] [site](https://freeleaguepublishing.com/en/games/into-the-odd/) Into the Odd is a rules light [[Tabletop Roleplaying Games|TTRPG]] system that was originally released as a single page of rules, but was re-released by [[Fria Ligan]] as a slightly expanded, but still quite short, rulebook. ## System Summary Setting:: Post-industrialization gritty world, low fantasy, but with some magic and some technology Classes:: No Races:: No - all humans Tests:: 1d20 vs. Ability Score (rolling under the Ability Score succeeds) Degree of success:: No Attributes:: Strength, Dexterity, Willpower Player agency:: Low PC hardiness:: Medium - low HP, but after HP, the Strength Score is reduced, and even after that, a character can still recover if they have another character tend to their wounds afterwards. PC power level:: Low ## Distinctive Features ### No ability modifiers - roll-under system In Into the Odd, there are no ability modifiers. A standard test or "save" consists of a player rolling a d20. If they roll lower than their relevant ability score, then they succeed. Otherwise, they fail. This means that *higher ability scores are still better*, but it cleverly reduces the need to add anything to a roll while still making it easier to succeed if your scores are higher. ### No rolling to attack There are no "to hit" rolls; attackers roll the damage dice that their weapons have and reduce the number rolled by the armor of the defender. The defender automatically gets damaged by the end result. This simplifies combat significantly and also makes it more deadly, as getting hit is a certainty. ### Simple character creation To create a character: - Roll 3d6 for each of the three main attributes (Strength, Dexterity, and Willpower). - Roll 1d6 for HP. - Use the previous two rolls to find a *Starter Package* that includes gear, weapons, armor, and/or *arcanum* (magic). - If you got arcanum, roll for it randomly. ### Luck rolls Into the Odd has something called "luck rolls" which are not saves-- they are straight 1d20 rolls for things that don't fit into any of the three attributes or are just for unexpected things. ## My impressions of Into the Odd Into the Odd has an awesome design, as can be expected from [[Johan Nohr]]. The rules for actually playing the game, even in the extended version with cool art, fits on 23 small pages. I would love to play this! ### What I like - ### What I don't like - ### My games of Into the Odd - ## Resources -
