# [[Kids on Bikes]]
[site](https://www.huntersentertainment.com/kidsonbikesrpg)
Kids on Bikes is a [[Tabletop Roleplaying Games|TTRPG]] system about kids (and some adults) exploring occult mysteries in a small, sleepy town.
## System Summary
Setting:: Modern, small-town America
Classes:: Yes, sort of, *tropes* - Brilliant mathlete, loner weirdo, bully, conspiracy theoriest, etc.
Races:: No
Tests:: die of appropriate stat + exploding dice + age bonus vs. GM-determined difficulty
Degree of success:: Yes, exploding dice on highest value rolled for die
Attributes:: Fight, Brains, Charm, Flight, Brawn, Grit
Player agency:: High - Adversity Tokens turn the tide
PC hardiness:: Medium - Adversity Tokens help, but everyone is still frail
PC power level:: Low - no magical or supernatural powers
## Distinctive Features
### Adversity tokens increase your chances of success with every failure
Whenever you fail a check, you get an adversity token. You can then use an adversity token to help yourself or others in a future check, adding +1.
### Age bonuses
In KoB, you can play children, teens, and adults, and each group has different bonuses due to their age:
- Children: +1 to Charm and Flight
- Teens: +1 to Brawn and Fight
- Adults: +1 to Grit and Brains
### Planned actions have increased chances of success
You can always roll for it, but if you are doing a Planned Action, you can also opt to take half the die's value instead of risking the roll. With Planned Actions, both you and others can spend Adversity Tokens to increase your total value.
When you're not doing a Planned Action, it's a Snap Decision. You cannot use half the die's value during a Snap Decision, and only you can use your Adversity Tokens to increase the roll.
## My impressions of Kids on Bikes
It looks like a light system, one that would be well-suited to one-shots!
### What I like
- The exploding dice are so much fun! Also, they make the difference between the stats not as huge as I initially thought, since d4s are much more likely to explode than d20s are.
- The collaborative character and world creation are the best parts of the game! Before you even start the game, you feel this is *your* world and *your* story, along with the rest of the group.
- It's simple and easy to teach even to those who haven't read the rules.
### What I don't like
- Combat is largely hand-waved and more narrative than tactical.
- While you can play adults, the theme lends itself best to playing children or teens, which is fun only a few times.
- It doesn't have enough meat for a long-term campaign.
