%% date:: [[2022-10-10]], [[2022-10-30]] %% # [[Knave]] [site](https://questingbeast.itch.io/knave) Knave is an [[Old School Revival|OSR]] [[Tabletop Roleplaying Games|TTRPG]] set in a fantasy world. The latest version is the second edition, which is released only to [[Ben Milton]]'s patrons on Patreon. ## System Summary Setting:: any Classes:: Yes, *careers* Races:: human only by default Tests:: 1d20 + ability modifier vs. 16 or 11+HD of monster Degree of success:: No Attributes:: Strength, Constitution, Wisdom, Charisma, Intelligence, Dexterity Player agency:: Low PC hardiness:: Medium - hits affect HP first, then item slots PC power level:: Medium - spells add a lot of utility and damage ## Distinctive Features ### Classless, sort of Knave doesn't have classes. Instead, what you can do is determined by the items you carry. However, it does include a random table of "careers" that give you certain sets of items. These careers approximate the effect of a class on characters. ### Inventory management Inventory management is a big part of Knave. It determines what you can do, and it also does double duty as an HP buffer. When characters are wounded in Knave, their HP is deducted first, but then they have the option to assign further wounds to item slots. When they do so, the items in the selected item slots are not usable and might even be broken (if the damage would have broken the item). ### Chaos spellbook option Knave 2e has optional rules for "chaos spellbooks", inspired by [[Maze Rats]] and [[White Hack]]. Instead of choosing from the (also included) list of spells with descriptions, groups can also choose to roll random spell names instead. When the latter option is selected, players roll for the name of their spells and then determine together with their GM what it might do. ## My impressions of Knave ### What I like - Chaos spellbooks are freaking awesome and a lot of fun to roll on! Almost every spell name sounds flavourful and evocative, and every character wants them. - Knave is a light OSR system. It's fairly easy to create a character and fairly easy to learn how to play it. ### What I don't like - Knave 2e is still in draft, and some of the writing could use some editing for clarity. It assumes knowledge and prior experience of OSR games that many readers (including myself) might not necessarily have. For example, the explanation on saves was sparse and unnecessarily complex. ## My games of Knave - [[World of The Western Realms]] (Knave 1e, player) - [[World of The Waking of Willowby Hall]] (Knave 2e, GM) %% ```dataview TABLE system as "System", role as "Role" from "ttrpgs" where contains(type,"world") and contains(system,"Knave") ``` %% ## Resources -
