LCP determines what "main content" is by timing how long it takes for the *largest element* to be rendered. This means it's not always accurate, but it's accurate for most situations and also simple to explain. ![[largest-contentful-paint.png]] [^corewebvitals] ## Alternatives ### [[First Contentful Paint (FCP)]] This metric replaced FCP in the Core Web Vitals because FCP only looks at the very beginning of the rendering process and doesn't match up with when users can actually interact with a web page. ### [[First Meaningful Paint (FMP)]] This metric measures when the "primary" content of a page is visible, but it was overly sensitive to small differences in the page load, leading to inconsistent results. Because of this, it was removed from the CWV and from [[Lighthouse]] metrics. ### [[Speed Index (SI)]] The Speed Index measures how long it takes before content is visually displayed when a page is accessed *compared to other websites*. It is still part of [[Lighthouse]] metrics. [^corewebvitals]: Google. *Core web vitals*. Retrieved on January 20th, 2023, from https://web.dev/vitals/#core-web-vitals
