As Dungeon Masters, we often feel that we need to have everything scripted out, especially when it comes to story. However, sometimes players can participate in that as well. A common tactic to fill in the blanks is to drop a key object or event into a session and listen to players try to make sense of it. Sometimes, they come up with a better explanation than you would.
Some ideas for things that might spark speculation:
- A map
- A code
- An undelivered letter
- A key
These things could be found in a dungeon, in a dead creature's pockets, in a loose tile underneath a tavern room, or in a hand-off between two unsavory types the characters come across.
