# [[Markup languages]]
A markup language is a lightweight programming language that is optimized for displaying text. It is an intermediary format that is best for focusing on writing, after which it is usually converted to a more publishing-friendly format such as [[XML]].
Markup languages are lightweight in that they have simplified syntax and a limited feature set. They are typically not [[Turing complete]], but they are easy to use.
