# [[Maze Rats]]
[site](https://questingbeast.itch.io/maze-rats)
Maze Rats is a [[Tabletop Roleplaying Games|TTRPG]] in the [[Old School Revival|OSR]] style, but unlike retro clones, it doesn't attempt to recreate the rules from [[Basic Expert D&D]]. Instead, it provides a lightweight framework for getting started with OSR.
The word "maze" is used instead of "dungeon". Maze Rats refer to the characters of the adventuring party.
## Defining characteristics
### d6 only
Only d6s are used in Maze Rats, regardless of the type of roll.
### Danger rolls not checks
Instead of rolling ability checks, danger rolls are rolled. The name emphasizes that rolls are only called for by the GM if there is a _danger_ or some sort of negative consequence to failing an action.
A danger roll consists of rolling 2d6. The default DC is 10, but the GM may also decide that a roll is contested by another creature.
Attack rolls are also rolled using a 2d6.
Both attack rolls and ability checks are added to appropriate character modifiers.
### Full HP restoration on long rest
Unlike other OSR games, in Maze Rats, players regain all their HP when they take a long rest. Eating a meal still only restores 1 HP, however, easing up on the long rest rules means Maze Rats PCs have a slightly higher chance of surviving.
### Limited character progression
Characters can only get as high as 7th level, and all characters choose from the same benefits upon levelling up (bonus to max health, attack bonus, a spell slot, or a new path).
### Paths as professions
PCs _may_ begin with paths, which are a mixture of backgrounds, professions, and feats.
### Random spell names
Maze Rats has a magical system, but NO default spells. Instead, spellcasters roll on a table to get a title of a spell, and then players must discuss how the spell works with their GM.
Spells are generated anew upon character creation (for characters with spell slots) and every in-game morning.
### Lots of random tables
Maze Rats has LOTS of random tables for everything!
