Typically, this form of character experiences a change in their way of thinking throughout the story: - In the beginning, they wish they were "normal" and fully uphold the status quo. - Close to the beginning, they have a chance encounter with someone who's not quite normal, either. - As the story progresses, they begin to wonder about different ways to live. - During the climax, they fully rebel against their old way of life and actively try to change the situation. - In the end, they learn to accept themselves for who they are, and even delight in it. ## Examples - [[Red Rising]]: Reds are meant to live underground, while the Gold are the military rulers and pinnacle of civilization. - [[Harry Potter]]: Harry starts out wishing he were like Muggles, but quickly realises that it's way cooler to be a wizard. - [[The Echo Wife]]: Martina is a clone of a real person, and initially spends a lot of time trying to act human. By the end, though, she's learned to subvert her programming and steer into what she wants to be, rather than what she was programmed to be.
