# [[Online Transaction Processing]]

Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) is a type of [[Data Processing System]] that is designed for real-time [[Ingest|ingestion]] of information and data integrity.
[[Data analysis comes at the expense of data processing]], so OLTP systems also tend to be not so great at [[Online Analytical Processing|OLAP]]. An example of this tradeoff is [[Grafana Loki]], which is an OLTP database and excellent at returning raw log lines. It's not so great at analytical use cases like aggregating across large amounts of log lines, which is why one of the changes in [[Loki 4.0]] is a shift towards a [[Column-oriented database]] format, called [[DataObject]].
