# [[PrEP]]

PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure [[Prophylaxis]] and is an antiretroviral created to prevent against the spread of [[HIV]]. It is recommended for those who are at higher risk for contracting HIV, including:
- [[Homosexuality|Gay]] men
- [[Polyamory|polyamorous]] people
- those who have sex (especially receptive sex) without [[Prophylaxis|Barriers]]
- those with partners who are HIV positive
- those who use shared needles for injections
PrEP has been estimated to reduce the chances of HIV transmission by 99%. [^cleveland] Additionally, at least one study has also shown it to reduce the transmission of [[HSV-2]]. [^hsv]
PrEP is usually a pill taken orally.
