# [[Range vectors]]

A range [[Vector]] is a set of data points within a specific time range (like 5 minutes) for a single [[Time Series]].
A range vector [[Aggregating monitoring data|Aggregation]] applies a function over the entire set.
Range vectors can be slightly different depending on the context they're used in.
In [[Prometheus]], a range vector is a time series with multiple data points over a time range, used in [[Metric queries in Prometheus]].
In [[Grafana Loki|Loki]], a range vector is a set of log lines matched over a time window. They're not actually numbers, so are technically returned by [[Log queries in Loki]], although they're often fed into [[Metric queries in Loki]] as input.
The term "range vector" was actually popularized by Prometheus and [[PromQL]].
