In some ways, this is a subversion of the trope of superhumans being the heroes: in this form, people with special abilities are instead shunned, scorned, or, worse, hunted for their abilities.
This always requires the superhumans to have crippling weaknesses, or the reader to have a strong suspension of disbelief.
## Examples
- The Grisha in [[The Shadow and Bone Trilogy (series)]] are powerful, but can inexplicably be compelled into service and hunted.
- The X-Men, in some points in the franchise, have faced backlash from the very society they tried to protect.
