%% date:: [[2023-01-10]], [[2023-01-11]] %% # [[Things I learned about making a course]] Log of things I learned while [[Making a course]]. - Write out the description, summary *first*-- you'll need text to go along with videos anyway, so you might as well start with the description and use that aas a script for the videos, even if you don't mimic it word for word. - Be more strategic about integrations. Yeah it sucks, but this stuff needs to be sorted out. - [[Podia]] to [[Patreon]]? How much of a discount do they get? - [[Podia]] to [[Discord]]? - Do students get emails when they sign up? - Do you want to have an afifliate program? Do you want to approach others to ask if they want to be affiliates? You should sort this out... *before* go-live. - Actually think about promoting it publicly to more than just your Patreons. - Find a way to be more transparent about the process *while* you're making the course. - You can do this on your own, but give yourself a break and ask others for help (and compensate them fairly). It'll be faster that way. - Record all the videos on the same day or at least the same week, so they're all fresh in your mind. - Don't record the announcement video until you already have the course! - Name - Duration-- don't say 3 hours if you don't yet know you'll have 3 hours! - Logo - What's included - When you say "Check out the links in description below", *write it down*. Otherwise you'll have to go through all the videos again listening for promises you made. - Don't start creating the course unless you know you have about three months uninterrupted by other commitments. - Take time off from work to do the course. Seriously, it's easier to get it done when it's the only thing you have to worry about. - Plan time and budget for reviewers to look at the final product, but also bring them in earlier when you actually have time to change issues they find. - Resist the urge to keep adding to it before you've even released it or gotten feedback. You came up with the structure for a reason, right? - Done is better than perfect. - Plan time and money for captioning all the videos. - Find a way to break it up into smaller chunks, and then beta test those chunks. Float the idea past your inner circle and see how much they actually like it before proceeding. That way, you limit how much of your work might potentially be lost. - Do more research on pricing. - Do more research on other similar courses that might be out at the same time. - Leave some time to strategically reach out to potential affiliates before the course launches.
