Video editing is the phase of [[Producing videos]] where footage is cut and assembled so as to tell a story.
## Principles of video editing
### Interrupt the pattern
[[YouTube]] videos that do well are those that change the pattern. Make sure something changes every few seconds, such as adding graphics to illustrate what you're saying, using music, and generally going between A-Roll and B-roll to keep viewers from getting bored.

### Remember that you're telling a story
Video editing is a form of storytelling. Think about a [[Three-Act Structure]] for your video, where it has a clear introduction, conflict, and resolution.
### Kill your darlings
Sometimes ideas sound better in your head than they turn out in reality. When that happens, don't be so attached to the ideas that you can't let them go even if they're detrimental to your message.
### Work in passes
There's a lot to video editing, and trying to incorporate them all into a single pass through the video is difficult because it requires a lot of context switching. Instead, try thinking in terms of stages, each of which involving going through the video but with a different objective:
- Arranging A-roll and setting the sequence
- Cutting A-roll - remove pauses
- Add B-roll every few seconds, or to cover cuts in A-roll.
- Add motion graphics and on-screen text
- Add music and adjust B-roll if necessary to "edit on the beat".
