File recovery is a [[Core plugins|core plugin]] that prevents accidental data loss by taking snapshots of your vault while you're using it and allowing you to see changes you made over time. You can also always undo (or redo) your last few actions from the Edit menu, but if you find yourself wanting to undo for more than the last few actions, restoring a snapshot is the way to go. ## Viewing snapshots To view the snapshots, go to Settings > File recovery, click View next to *Snapshots* and choose a file that you'd like to see the snapshot history of. Select it. The list of snapshots Obsidian has taken for that file are displayed on the left, with the corresponding content on the right. ![[file-recovery-snapshots.png]] You can also toggle *Show diff* to see only the differences from one version to the next. ![[file-recovery-diff.png]] When you have *Show diff* enabled, only lines that have been modified are shown. The lines removed are shown in red, and the lines added are shown in yellow. You can also click on the button at the bottom to copy the Markdown text to restore it to the current version.
