Format converter is a [[Core plugins|core plugin]] that is disabled by default, and it contains options for migrating *to* Obsidian from other tools that use Markdown, such as Bear or Roam Research. ![[format-converter.png]] Even tools that use Markdown may have some application-specific formats that Obsidian doesn't recognize, such as those for tags, highlights, tasks, and links. ## Using the format converter To use the Format converter: 1. Import the Markdown files you have from the other tool, or open the folder of notes as a vault in Obsidian. 2. Take a backup of your current vault, in case you need to go back to them. The format converter is going to be changing some parts of your notes, so it's always a good idea to make sure you have backups in place. 3. Go to the [[Command palette]] and select `Format converter: Open format converter.` 4. Toggle the actions you want Obsidian to perform on your notes. 5. Click *Start conversion*.
