Tags is a [[Core plugins|core plugin]] that allows you to add a type of metadata to your notes. It is enabled by default. You can use tags in Obsidian by typing a hashtag, followed by a word. Tags are applied to the entire note. ![[Using the right side panel and links#Tags]] ## Nested tags Tags can also be nested like folders, so that you have parent tags and child tags. For example: ``` #people/family ``` Using this tag on the note [[Maria]] assigns her to both the tag `#people` and the tag `#people/family`. Why wouldn't you just create two separate tags, `#people` and `#family`? Nesting tags lets you use the same tag in different contexts. For this example, you could have: - `#people/family` - `#vacations/family` - `#meetings/family` - `#languages/family` Nesting tags is also a way to organize your tags, in the same way you might do with folders. ## Tagging notes ### Inline tag Create a tag: #test #people ### Frontmatter tags ``` --- tags: people/family --- ``` ## Use cases for tags - inbox - todo - projectA, projectB - location - 2022
