Rearranging the way notes are displayed in Obsidian can help you be more productive. ## Tabs A tab is a representation of a note that you can click on to switch the view to that note. In Obsidian, tabs work the way browser tabs do: you can have multiple notes open at a time, and each one will be displayed as a tab. ![[ui-tabs.png]] In the screenshot above, two notes are open, and each one is represented by a tab. The tab that is selected is the one whose contents are displayed. ### Open notes in new tab To open notes in a new tab, you can: - create a new tab and open the note in it - `CMD/CTRL+click` on a link to a note To create a new tab, click on the + icon to the right of the current tab. Then you can create or open a note [[Installing Obsidian#Creating your first note in Obsidian|the usual way]]. Try holding the `CMD` (Mac) or `CTRL` (Windows/Linux) key and then clicking this link: [[Obsidian for Everyone course]] The note should open in a new tab. ## Tab groups A tab group is a number of tabs that are displayed together. Within a tab group, only a single tab can have its contents displayed at a time. You can click on another tab to have *that* tab's contents displayed, but it replaces the previous tab's contents. Tab groups are a way to see multiple notes at once. To create a new tab group, click and hold a tab and then drag and drop it to another place in Obsidian. This could be: - elsewhere in the [[Editor]] (to the right/left or above/below the current tab group) - on the right sidebar - on the left sidebar Experiment with it now! As you drag a tab around, Obsidian highlights an area in red to show you where your new tab group would go if you dropped it in that spot. ### Stacked tabs Stacked tabs is an alternate way to view tabs within a tab group. To try it out, open multiple notes in the same tab group and on the upper right hand corner, click on the down arrow. Select *Stack tabs*. You'll see something like this: ![[ui-stacked-tabs.png]] When tabs are stacked, they are fanned out the way they would be if you had separate sheets of paper on your desk. You can then click on each note to bring it into focus, or use a trackpad or mouse capable of horizontal scrolling to flick between them. To go back to the original way of viewing tabs, click on the same down arrow and click *Unstack tabs*. ## Windows You can also create new *windows* in Obsidian the way you can have multiple web browser windows. To create a new window: - open the [[Command palette]] (`CMD/CTRL+P`) and select *Open current tab in new window* - drag and drop a note outside of the current Obsidian window Using multiple windows gives you a way to use Obsidian across multiple monitors, or to just give you more space to put notes. ## Related - [[Workspaces]]
