# [[Get clear on your vision]]
*A module from the course [[Master YouTube]].*
> Be so good that you don't have to think about the algorithm.

Ignore what others say about quantity... focus on the quality.
[[Pareto Principle]] for content creators: Dedicate 20% to marketing, and 80% to making content.
The algorithm isn't a bad thing-- it helps you find your audience.
### 3 key ingredients to success on YouTube
![[davella-3-key-ingredients-to-success.png]]
... but you can only choose two!
Value + Personality: most political pundits, [[Gary Vaynerchuk]]
Personality + Filmmaking chops: Weezy Waiter
Value + Filmmaking chops: [[Marques Brownlee]], [[Matt D'Avella]]
### 3 keys to success
- Hard work
- Block at least 10 hours a week to work on content.
- Persistence
- Have the grit and willpower to keep going despite not seeing results.
- How to stay motivated? Get clear on your *why*.
- Be realistic about when you're going to see success. Think about giving it 3 years. This will help you build something more sustainable and shift your mindset.
- Get practical and build your financial runway when you want to make the jump to full-time creator. (Matt recommends a 12-month buffer!)
- Experimentation
- Try different topics. Look for something that resonates with you *and* with your audience.
- Choosing a path too early leads to frustration and overwhelm. Being consistently wrong is worthless.
- Even when you find your niche, keep experimenting within it. This keeps your channel fresh for viewers, but also for yourself.
### Finding your inner circle
- Your inner circle is the 5-10 people you're closest to. Surround yourself with people who will support you.
- Create meaningful connections with other creators. (Find people that you can provide value for too)
- Regularly comment on their content.
- Join communities and forums online.
- To "punch above your weight class", start an interview series and invite creators that are bigger than you.
- Email subject: focus on the benefits, like *Interview request with like-minded creative*
- Make the pitch personal.
- End with benefits for the guest (they could promote their new book/video/whatever).
- Create a Mastermind
- Schedule in a quarterly catch-up call with your mastermind group.
- Make experts your inner circle by reading a lot!
### Develop your content strategy
- Research:
- Look at creators you like, and figure out what their strengths are.
- Who are the creators in your space?
- Don't fall into the trap of comparing yourself. Get inspired by people instead.
- Which *videos* do you like the most, even if they don't have a lot of views?
- Then, cut down on your consumption! You can't create as much if you're always consuming.
- Pick broad topics
- ... that you're interested in!
- Pick sub-topics
- Like: self-development, lifestyle & beauty, and travel
- Add a few items under each one.
- Pick 5 items from the list. These are your content pillars.
### Develop your audience persona
- Name
- Age
- Gender
- What interests do they have?
- What are their values and aspirations?
- What challenges are they facing? What are the main pain points they're experiencing? Where do they feel stuck?
- What are their goals/desires?
### Tone
> People remember how you made them feel.
- Select adjectives that describe your vibe. Like: *self-deprecating, disciplined, minimalist.*
- Am I being honest about my experience?
- Am I being too preachy?
### Video format
Experiment a lot here in the beginning!
- Talking head
- Q&A
- Documentary
- Vlog
- Tutorial
- Review
- Interview
- Comedy sketch
### Cadence
- Yes, consistency is key.
- 1 video a month to 3 videos a week.
- Matt recommends at least a video every other week when you're starting.
- Don't worry about what time you post.
- Choose a day that helps you create a good work/life balance.
### Content positioning
- Who is it for?
- What do you provide?
- Why is it different?
