- Process for capturing notes and ideas
- 1. Take notes on interesting ideas from research papers found. Link to the original source but only include the interesting stuff.
- 2. Later, turn particularly interesting ideas into Zettels.
- Joel uses the convention `Z: Compositionality is necessary for synthesis.`, where the `Z:` prefix means it's a Zettel.
- A Zettel should be compact and a self-sufficient idea that he can reference later.
- Each Zettel is a page. Joel thinks that with Roam, you __can__ just leave a Zettel as a block, since you can reference blocks, but he thinks it's easier to create a new page because you might then be tempted to make sure that every block is referenceable and a self-contained idea.
- 3. Add tags to the new Zettel to be able to find it later.
- 4. Revise your Zettels to see if there are projects that you'd like to create using them.
- Joel's system is based on [[Article/Andy Matuschak's Notes (series)]] [[Andy Matuschak]] on [[Roam Research]]

- "[[My Zettelkasten process]]"
- "**1. Take notes on the content.**"
- "Create a page for every bit of content that resonates with me. Take superficial notes about the content, mostly in the creator's own words. "
- "Use the prefix `O:` to denote that it is work created by Others."
- "In the case of Kindle books, add highlights or quotes to the O-page as well."
- "**2. Create Literature Notes.**"
- "As soon as possible after consumption of the content, create a Literature Notes page for the content."
- "Use the prefix `L:` to denote that the page contains literature notes on a work by others."
- "This step may be skipped for shorter pieces of content (video, tweet)."
- "**3. Create Zettels.**"
- "Go through the literature notes to see what ideas particularly resonate with you."
- "Turn the best ideas into their own pages."
- "Use the `Z:` prefix to denote that they are Zettels."
- "Make the title a complete thought or sentence as much as possible."
- "Add tags about what the Zettel/Claim refers to, including a `[[Zettel]]` or `[[Claim]]` tag to find it later."
- "Expound on it. Write a short snippet that you can reuse as a part of a blog post, summarizing the idea and relating it to other ideas you already know."
