Millions of people ask questions all the time. Why would anyone answer yours? No, the best way to get a good answer... is to post the a *bad* answer. This is called "Cunningham's Law". It's overly simplistic and even misattributed to someone named Ward Cunningham, who denies ever having said it, but I can't help but feel there's still a little kernel of truth in it. The truth is this: it's easier to get feedback when we show our work. In this video, I'm going to talk about 10 different ways that I show my work by learning in public. Because that's really what all this note-taking is about: learning. ### Structure - 1. Answer questions even when you're not sure. Raise PRs even if you're sure there's a better way. But be honest about what you know! - 2. Read/listen/watch in public - Making my [[Readwise]] highlights public. - 3. `#TIL` on social media. - (show my posts on pkm.social) - 4. Publish your notes. - Obsidian Publish - Keep a public changelog. - And ask people what's wrong! - ![[lip-monitoring-kubernetes-daniel.png]] - ![[lip-monitoring-kubernetes-response-daniel.png]] - ![[learning-in-public-paul-balogh-instrumentation.png]] - 5. Do livestreams where you just get to ask experts questions and be a public noob. - No editing - It's exposure for them, it's 1:1 time with an expert for me, and it's an opportunity for the audience to ask questions. - Show `developer-advocacy` vault/GitHub repository - I show guests this before going live. > [!NOTE] To Eve > Please add 18:18-18:38 or so from the file `How to do continuous profiling right with Grafana Pyroscope_s Ryan Perry _Grafana Office Hours _26_.mp4` after I talk about asking people basic questions. - 6. Summarise your notes in slide form and present it. Submit CFPs before the research is even done. - [[sources/Presentation/Mine/Emergent load testing - TestCon Europe 2023|Emergent load testing - TestCon Europe 2023]] - 7. Make edited videos and actually read, if not respond to, all the comments. - Show video template: [[NVDH Video]] - 8. Write a newsletter/blog that's a more polished version of your notes. - Buttondown-Obsidian integration: [[TIP 01 - Wearing blades as well as jewels]] - 9. Do canary deployments. - Inner circle: friends - Encourage ritual dissent. - Friendly public: Patreon - Public: that's all of you ### Outro But wait-- didn't I say there'd be 10 ways I learn in public? - 10. Write a book in public. - It's called Doing It in Public. - This is really scary for me. But I'm going to do it anyway. - If you want to come along for the ride, click here to join my Discord server. There'll be a channel called "book-doing-it-in-public". - Give me feedback on two things: Outline and Introduction. Thanks for watching! *Mulศ›umesc*.
