In this video, I'm going to talk about how I use Obsidian to take notes on people, and the templates I use as a framework. ### Structure - Why take notes on people? - I move around a lot, and relationships have to be intentional. - It helps me prioritise the people who are the most important. - It helps me make deeper connections faster: instead of remembering everything about a person, I let Obsidian do that, and only have to remember that this person is important. - When to take notes on people - Overarching principle: Listen in the first place. *Then* take notes. - The [[Person]] template ([in nvdh-vault](obsidian://open?vault=nvdh-vault&file=templates%2Fperson)) - ![[Person]] - In meetings - I always take notes: Obsidian on laptop, Obsidian on iPad/mobile, or just good old pen and paper - Link to them - [[Default Meeting]] (in [nvdh-vault](obsidian://open?vault=nvdh-vault&file=templates%2Fmeeting)) - ![[Default Meeting]] - Why I use an inline parameter instead of YAML frontmatter in this case - At conferences - Document your day to jog your memory (bonus: social media) -- talks you went to, people you met: photo, video, notes - Take photos of people's name tags, connect with them on LinkedIn or other socials right away (LinkedIn: Show how to show QR code) - At the end of the day, or at scheduled breaks, dump everything you remember into notes. - When you're consuming their content - Readwise import - Twitter/Mastodon -- daily note - Privacy - Put all notes on people in a separate folder - If you're using Obsidian Publish, exclude that folder. - If you're using Obsidian Sync: Encrypt your vault, or consider not syncing the People folder. - Consider using a plugin like Meld Encrypt. - [[Daily]] template (in [nvdh-vault](obsidian://open?vault=nvdh-vault&file=templates%2Fdaily)) ### Outro I don't take notes on *every* person that I meet. I take into account factors like the number of times I've met someone, my chemistry with them, and how much of an effect they're likely to have in my life-- and then I take notes accordingly. After years of doing this to varying degrees, I've come to the conclusion that taking notes on people is *not* weird. It's the opposite: it's my way of saying, "Hey, I cared about you enough to want to remember what you're like". When used this way, out of a genuine desire to connect with another human, I think taking notes on people is a compliment. If you'd like to see more about how I use the plugin Templater to automate the creation of many types of notes, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j9fAvJCaig. *Chi trova un amico, trova un tesoro*. ### Related videos and resources ### Pinned comment ``` THEME: AnuPpuccin PLUGINS MENTIONED: QuickAdd, Dataview, Dice Roller, Obsidian Publish, Obsidian Sync, Meld Encrypt ``` ### Timestamps #### Edited video 00:00 Intro 00:25 Why take notes on people? 01:51 When should you take notes on people? 02:44 Meeting template 04:23 Person template 11:27 Knife theory 12:56 In-person meetings and conferences 16:12 Consuming content from people 16:57 Following up with people 18:42 Privacy 22:09 Outro #### Raw video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFome4gYmvQ 00:00 Intro 00:46 Why take notes on people? 03:06 When should you take notes on people? 04:44 Meeting template 07:36 Person template 16:37 Knife theory 18:56 Why I put links within double quotes 20:35 In-person meetings and conferences 25:18 Consuming content from people 26:27 Privacy 34:14 Following up with people 37:10 Outro ## Post-production - [x] Create captions using Rev, then edit them. - [x] Take a thumbnail photo and create one for YouTube (1280 x 720). - [x] Add description. - [x] Include the title and any keywords in the first few sentences, but in a natural way. - [x] Add related videos and resources as links. - [x] Add end screen. - [x] Add cards if necessary. - [x] Add chapters/timestamps for YouTube if longer than 5 minutes. - [x] Add mid-roll ads/check monetization settings. - [x] Add pinned comment. - [x] Post video preview on Patreon. - [x] Schedule on YouTube. - [x] Add video to relevant playlist(s), or create a playlist if necessary. - [x] Schedule on Twitter. - [x] Schedule on Mastodon. - [x] Promote on Discord (NVDH). - [ ] Create a blog post on [site](https://nicolevanderhoeven.com). - [x] Add to [video-database](obsidian://open?vault=obsidian-playbook&file=video-database%2FVideo%20database). - [ ] Add to other notes in my vault as appropriate.
