GTD in Obsidian ## Hook According to Forbes in 2014, the book "Getting Things Done" by David Allen had sold 1.6 million copies. GTD, as it's often abbreviated, has spread like wildfire since then, and even today, it's still one of the most popular productivity methodologies out there. Here's the problem. It was first written 21 years ago. To put things into perspective, a weird new online encyclopedia called Wikipedia had just come online, a social network originally called FaceMash wouldn't be launched for a couple years more, and Yahoo was about to laughingly refuse to buy this insignificant little search engine called Google. So using PURE GTD today is nostalgic at best and shockingly impractical at worst. In this video, I'm going to show you how I've adapted it in Obsidian for life in the 21st century. ## Structure [[Getting Things Done|GTD]] - The best parts of GTD - The philosophy: Mind like water - The importance of clarifying the next step - Regular reviews - I've talked about how I process information with Readwise _here_ (point) - I've talked about how I use templates for doing daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals _here_ (point). - So today, I'm going to focus on task management. - Checklist is an easy way to do task management using tags. - Plugin settings? - GTD implementation - inbox - next action - waiting for - someday/maybe - tag for contexts and people - Disadvantages of Dataview for task management - indented tasks (sub-tasks) aren't displayed. - Complicated? You need to have a query first. ## Outro The Checklist plugin is how I personally track tasks in Obsidian. However, last week I did a video on task management in Obsidian, but using Dataview. That's a valid approach that many people like because it lets you include your tasks within your notes, as opposed to having tasks on a separate panel in Obsidian. One of the parts of GTD that really shows its age is the concept of a tickler file system, which is a system of 43 physical folders that you use to remind yourself of date-sensitive tasks and data. I've abandoned that idea entirely and use a smart calendar blocking system called Reclaim. My advice is to try out the system that works best for you, and don't worry about methodologies or terminology.
