What is Visual Zettelkasten (46) 2. ==How to make your notes visual== (100) ### Hook %%[A-roll]%% The idea that some of us are visual learners %%[B-roll: stock]%% and others are, for example, auditory learners %%[B-roll: stock]%%, is a myth. Instead, what we're finding out is that most people learn better when different types of stimuli are grouped together %%[B-roll: Duolingo or Memrise mobile screen recording]%%. Presenting text with images and even sound is going to help make that information more meaningful %%[B-roll: video clip from Thai alphabet video]%%, and thus easier for us to understand. That's why we're here on YouTube, right? But how do we translate that into our notes? Hi! I'm Nicole van der Hoeven and on this channel, I talk about ways I min/max my life, including using digital tools like Obsidian. In this video, I'm going to talk about how to incorporate visual elements %%[motion graphics: animation to emphasis "visual elements"]%% into your notes and different plugins you can use to do so. %%[motion graphics: pop-out side panel with a list of plugins I'm going to mention in this video: Excalidraw, Callouts, Leaflet, Kanban, Tracker, Excalibrain, Advanced Slides, Mind Map]%% ### Structure - What you can use visuals for %%[A-roll, with motion graphics with text for each point]%% - To capture - To explain - To track - To aggregate - To contextualize - To capture %%[Motion graphic]%% - Just embedding images from the web %%[B-roll: me dragging and dropping a photo into Obsidian desktop]%% - using Notability for iPad and then putting the resulting photo on Obsidian - Sketchnoting: Excalidraw (can be on mobile too) %%[B-roll: me drawing something in Excalidraw on my iPad, then a screen recording of how that looks in Obsidian mobile on my Android, and Obsidian desktop]%% - To explain %%[Motion graphic]%% - All digital writing should be skimmable. That counts for your notes, too. - Use Markdown headings %%[screen recording: me explaining how headings can add visual separation]%% - Callouts - [[Swedish (language)]] %%[screen recording]%% - [[Learn to make better videos (faster)]] %%[screen recording]%% - Obsidian Leaflet - [[The Gauntlight]] %%[screen recording]%% - To track %%[Motion graphic]%% - Kanban - [[Starship Avantika Board]] for [[Fate Condensed]] %%[screen recording]%% - Tracker - [[Testing Obsidian Tracker]] %%[screen recording]%% - Excalidraw as a way to put tags on images for later searching in Dataview. - [[Irae-flowchart.excalidraw]] %%[screen recording]%% - To aggregate %%[Motion graphic]%% - Excalidraw - Zsolt's [How to Take Smart Notes Book on a Page](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o49C8jQIsvs) %%[B-roll: a clip from Zsolt's video]%% - [[The Continuous Testing Snowball]] %%[B-roll]%% - [[JMeter structure vs k6 structure]] %%[B-roll]%% - [[Parallelism]] %%[screen recording]%% - Advanced Slides - [[How eBPF is different from traditional instrumentation]] %%[B-roll: clip from my previous video on this subject]%% - Videos - [[Browser-based vs protocol-based testing]] %%[B-roll]%% - To contextualize %%[Motion graphic]%% - Graph view %%[B-roll]%% - Mind Map - [[Map of software testing]] %%[screen recording]%% - Excalibrain - [[Observability]] %%[B-roll]%% ### Outro [A-roll] Adding a visual layer to your notes *can* be time-consuming, but it doesn't have to be. Your notes are there to aid *your* learning, so choose the parts that work for you and leave the rest. If you'd like to dip your toes into visual PKM, I recommend starting with the Excalidraw plugin and seeing how you can create drawings that make concepts more meaningful for you. *Tack sa mycket och hej då!* Thanks for watching. ### Related videos and resources Join my live interview of Zsolt Viczián here: https://youtube.com/watch?v=fXGcOWycgG4 Zsolt's video book summary of How to Take Smart Notes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o49C8jQIsvs Veritasium - The biggest myth in education: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhgwIhB58PA Visual map of content in Obsidian // Excalidraw plugin: https://youtu.be/erKrXsIwbAg Learning Thai language - Thai consonants: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuORgJRr7e4 My video on Obsidian Callouts: https://youtu.be/TqYQ0kA1yAo ### Pinned comment ``` Turn on notifications to catch my interview with the Excalidraw and ExcaliBrain plugins, Zsolt, Vizcáin, here: https://youtube.com/watch?v=fXGcOWycgG4 In this video, I used the Spectrum theme by Braweria: https://github.com/Braweria/Spectrum ``` ### Timestamps 0:00 Intro 0:54 Capture 02:10 Explain 06:33 Track 10:24 Aggregate 14:17 Contextualise ## Post-production - [x] Create captions using Rev, then edit them. - [x] Take a thumbnail photo and create one for YouTube (1280 x 720). - [x] Add description. - [x] Include the title and any keywords in the first few sentences, but in a natural way. - [x] Add related videos and resources as links. - [x] Add end screen. - [x] Add cards if necessary. - [x] Callouts around 03:23: https://youtu.be/TqYQ0kA1yAo - [x] Zsolt's video clip from his summary of *How to Take Smart Notes* - [x] Add chapters for YouTube if longer than 5 minutes. - [x] Add mid-roll ads/check monetization settings. - [x] Post video preview on Patreon. - [x] Post video preview for YouTube channel members. - [ ] Schedule on YouTube. - [ ] Add video to relevant playlist(s), or create a playlist if necessary. - [x] Promote on personal social media. - [x] Twitter - [ ] Create a blog post on [site](https://nicolevanderhoeven.com). - [ ] Add to video-database. - [ ] Add to other notes in my vault as appropriate. ## How long did this take me to make? 46mins recording 22:00-23:00 A-roll 23:00-00:44 Everything else TOTAL: About 02h44m
