Organizing notes in Obsidian (45) 4. > [!NOTE] Note to Eve > Main A-Roll: `A-roll/A6600/C0014.MP4` > Main audio: `Audio/POD00015.WAV` > B-Roll: `B-roll/OBS/2022-10-10 15-07-57.mp4` - for the "What to use when" part below ### Hook The most important thing about taking notes is that you do it. That's easy to say, but when you begin to have more of them, it becomes apparent that *some* sort of organizational structure is needed. So what do you do? Hi! I'm Nicole van der Hoeven, and on this channel I like to talk about tech, travel, and taking notes, especially with tools like Obsidian. In this video I'm going to show you how I organize my notes in the hopes that it might help *you* figure out how *you* might want to do it. ### Structure - What it boils down to: How are you going to find information again? - Methods - Folders - best for separation of concerns (publish or not) and to maintain uniqueness, best when there's only one place something could be - Links - best for semantic meaning and connecting notes especially when the connection is not obvious - Tags - best for system-related stuff, things that have no semantic similarities but are things you might need to action - Metadata - combinations of the above, visualizing, creating a database - LATCH (*Please add a video from either my talk with Zsolt Viczian, like you used before, or a new clip from one of his videos*) - Location - Alphabet - Time - Category - Hierarchy - What to use when - Location: links, metadata - Alphabet: folders - Time: links or metadata via daily notes, Calendar, Fantasy Calendar - Category: links via MoCs, metadata, tags - Hierarchy: metadata, links ### Outro Many people get stuck on how to organize notes, sometimes at the expense of not taking the notes in the first place. There's so much to do and none of us have enough time to do it perfectly-- so I think it's a much more realistic solution to do what you can, use the methods that make the most sense at the time, and then accept that you may have to do some upkeep later when you find something incorrectly organized. If you'd like to hear more about how real people process notes, check out this video on why Inbox Zero is a myth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bbj7xYj3Bc. Until next time, thanks for watching!
