What is Readwise Reader? (thoughts after 1 year of use) 2. I've been using Readwise Reader for a year - here's what you need to know 3. I can finally tell you about Readwise Reader ## Hook Whenever I've shared a bit about my workflow for processing articles into Obsidian, I've glossed over the specifics and focused on the part starting with Obsidian. That's because until last night, I wasn't allowed to talk too much about a product I use heavily. One of my favourite tools for learning, Readwise, just gave the go ahead for sharing more publicly about their new product, called Reader. I've actually been using Readwise Reader since August 17th, 2021 - over a year - and I'm extremely relieved, because it is a huge part of my workflow! To be clear, Reader isn't publicly *launched* yet, officially... but it's out of private beta, which means anyone can sign up for a waitlist. Here's everything you need to know about it. ## Structure - What is Readwise? - collects highlights and notes from a variety of sources (ebooks, podcasts, tweets, articles) - However, there were some sources that were missing, and they had to rely on services like Instapaper to send them highlights of web articles. So I had to pay for two services. - What is Reader? - Reader is a service that replaces Instapaper in taking highlights from web articles, but it's so much more. - Basically, Readwise used to be more of a middleware service, connecting to other services that they had to rely on to do the collecting. With Reader, Readwise is more of a standalone tool.? - Interface - Library - Inbox - Highlighting whole blocks - taking notes - archiving - saving for later - Feed - Bulk Actions - Articles - Install Readwise Highlighter - Click Highlighter when you want to save a page to Readwise (good for not reading impulsively) - Sort through books in Inbox: keyboard shortcuts galore! (Superhuman design) - Actually highlight images, tables that Instapaper really struggled with for me. - Navigation panel - Books - Emails (and newsletters) - When you subscribe to a newsletter, set up a filter to forward t hose emails to [email protected] instead. They automatically show up in inbox. - PDFs - Import PDF - Highlight ON the PDF - Tweets - Shortlist - Meant to help deal with information overload - Saved filters, like Starred Items - Keyboard shortcut `s` or apply tag `shortlist` and save documents here. - Create Filtered View - Also works on - Works on iPad and on Android - Roam, Notion, Evernote - Coming soon - Podcasts - Videos - How do you get it? - Reader isn't officially publically launched... but you *can* get on a waitlist. - Sign up for Readwise, get double the trial: https://readwise.io/nicole - When Reader officially launches, they'll "likely adjust pricing" but not if you already have an existing subscription. - Sign up for early access: https://readwise.io/read - Go to the Apps section and import existing articles - Set up integrations you want to use - Highlight away - Set up the Obsidian Official Readwise plugin ## Outro Reader dramatically increased the value of Readwise for me, so much so that within a week of using it, I cancelled my Instapaper and Mailbrew subscriptions and uninstalled them for good. That was over a year ago, and I haven't *once* missed either of them. The best part about all of this is that every single highlight from every single source eventually ends up in my Obsidian vault, forming a personal library of everything I've consumed. Check this video out to see how I do that, and if you sign up for Readwise, you can use my link to get double the trial length. Dziękuję! ## Related videos and resources https://readwise.io/nicole ### Pinned comment ``` It's really impressive to see how much the Readwise team has done in a year. Can't wait to see what they do next! https://readwise.io/nicole The theme I used in this video was Minimal, by @kepano: https://github.com/kepano/obsidian-minimal , with the red accent colour selected within the Obsidian settings. :) ``` ## Timestamps 0:00 Intro 01:09 What is Readwise?
