Introducing Popout Windows for obsidian ## Hook When I first started using Obsidian, me typing out notes looked like this. (image of a single note): a single note open. But these days, when I'm processing notes, I might have search up on my left sidebar, the outline and backlinks on my right sidebar, the original note with highlights, the note I'm actually typing atomic notes into, and maybe a few more down here. Obsidian's bidirectional linking really encourages us to compare and contrast notes, which takes up a lot of visible space. You might say, well, Nicole, get an external monitor. But that doesn't solve everything. Because you can't have the same Obsidian vault open in more than one window... or can you? Well, as of a few days ago, you can! ## Structure ![[obsidian-popout windows options.png]] - Obsidian Desktop v0.15.6 has just been released to the public, and the biggest feature it's brought with it is popout windows. I (and others on the Catalyst tier) have been trying it out for the last two weeks, so let me tell you what it's all about. - Ways to use it - Options - Move to new window - Command Pane - Open current pane in new window - Move current pane in new window - Right click (especially for images) - Open in new pane - Open in new window - Drag and Drop - Second Window plugin is redundant. - Use cases - Plugins that use it - Excalidraw - Excalibrain - Dual (or more) monitors - Move anything in the side panels (like extensions, calendar, etc) to a new window too. - Focus mode - Different lines of throught (personal + work for example) - You can also still arrange panels within the new windows - Saving workspaces saves the window configuration too!! - How can you get this? It's available for free to anyone. - Update installer if you have to!! Demo this. ## Outro I must admit that when I first heard about this feature, I was just kinda meh. I mean, who needs more windows? It turns out... I do. I need more windows. Because along with the ability to create windows is the ability to compartmentalize parts of your vault, to work on different parts of your notes at any point in time and not be distracted by everything else, and to spread out your vault over multiple monitors and just really have all your notes still perfectly readable. The last time I was this excited by a new core feature was Callouts - if you don't know what that is, check out this video to hear all about it. Until next time, thanks for watching.
