I take *a lot* of notes, but the notes aren't the point-- the learning is. I think of notes as *learning exhaust*: necessary byproducts of me acquiring a new skill or understanding a new idea. Notes chronicle the path I take while I'm learning, even if that involves detours. In this video, I'm going to show you a real-life example of how I went from reading a book (*Emergence* by Steven Johnson) to taking notes on it and finally to applying it to my own interests-- all while creating a lot of learning exhaust. ### Structure - Last November, I attended the first Visual Thinking Workshop by Zsolt Viczián - Tracing the path: Here's what I did - ![[Learning-exhaust.dark.png]] - In every single part of this process, I created something tangible as learning exhaust-- not for the purpose of creating, but as byproducts of the learning process. %%[[Learning-exhaust|🖋 Edit in Excalidraw]], and the [[Learning-exhaust.light.png|light exported image]]%% - Exhaust - Highlights: [[readwise/Books/Emergence|My highlights on Emergence]] (Raw Kindle highlights via Readwise) - Kindle Scribe: [[emergence-scribe-notes.pdf|My notes on Emergence on the Kindle Scribe]] (Kindle Scribe drawings/handwritten notes) - Commitment to present at KubeCon - Mastodon: https://pkm.social/@nicole/109831806135865649 (post about getting accepted) - Book notes: [[sources/Book/Emergence|Emergence book notes]] (summary of book) - Review: Mastodon: https://pkm.social/@nicole/110148696160246505 - Abstract note: [[Emergence]] (abstracted note) - Review: Mastodon: https://pkm.social/@nicole/110165275960089599 (with link to rough structure of talk) - Applied note: [[Emergent software]] - [[Emergent load testing - Rules for organized chaos - KubeCon EU 2023|Emergent load testing - Rules for organized chaos - KubeCon EU 2023]] (presentation) - Review: Mastodon (with main slides): https://pkm.social/@nicole/110209027419699038 - YouTube video of presentation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og4-Z6j_0M0 - Applied note: [[Emergent note-taking]] - [[Emergent note taking]] (video in another context) - Review: Released to Patreon a week before - [[Changelog]] ### Outro I first read Emergence in November last year, and my video on Emergent note taking was released a couple weeks ago. That's five months. So you might say that this process is quite time-consuming, and you'd be right. But I didn't think it was *tedious*, and that's because from the very beginning, I followed my interests. I'm not just learning about this stuff because I have to-- the idea of emergence captivated me from the moment I read it, and I followed that passion to its natural conclusion. When you learn from a place of passion rather than obligation, learning exhaust, including content that's hopefully interesting for others, occur almost without effort.
