Tabs in Obsidian (new in v0.16) ### Hook One of Obsidian's greatest strengths is its flexibility, and that's apparent even in the many ways you can view your notes. Obsidian's latest release, v0.16, adds to that even further, introducing something I didn't know I needed in Obsidian: tabs. ### Structure - How to update? - Settings > About > Check for Updates - Consider enabling *Automatic updates* unless you don't like to be surprised. Every release goes through internal testing (among the three devs), alpha testing (among a small group of external users), and beta testing (among everyone on the Catalyst plan, who can receive insider builds). - Tabs - Tabs work just like browser windows - Create a new tab in these ways: - Click + sign next to other tabs - From a note with links: CMD + click on a link - From the File Switcher: CMD + enter - Move to tabs, panes, windows by clicking and dragging. - Link with tab lets you select the same note in different panes and scroll them at the same time. - Tab stacks - Like [[Andy Matuschak]]'s notes - Use by clicking on the Dropdown options on the top right of a pane and clicking *Stack tabs*. Same thing, but select *Unstack tabs* to remove it. - How does this work with other functionalities? - Obsidian now has three different ways to display notes - Panes - Right click on a note: Split right/down instead of "split verically/horizontally" - From a note with links: CMD + option + click on a link - From the Command Pane: CMD + option + enter - Windows - Check out my Popout Windows video - Tabs - Workspaces are supercharged! They remember every combination of panes, windows, and tabs. (Show my TS5 D&D workspace) - There were other things in this release!: Themes - Theme + extensive redesign to make Obsidian look better and more accessible: "Dragonglass" - Notes now display the full note title inline with the note contents as an **Inline Title**. The view header is now disabled by default. You can add it back from _Appearance › Show view header_. - There’s now an “accent color” color-picker in the Appearance settings to give your vault it’s own unique style. Theme support may vary. - Themes support versioning now - Check all your custom keyboard shortcuts because there may be collisions between them now ### Outro I must admit, I was initially grumpy about the new release. I think it was because I really rely on my keyboard shortcuts and already have workflows for doing my work in Obsidian, both of which were disrupted by the appearance of tabs and everything that entailed. However, I've had a few weeks to try this out now, and after first begrudgingly using tabs and then learning how best to utilise them, I am now totally on board. The last major Obsidian release brought Popout Windows, also a huge improvement, and with both windows and tabs in Obsidian now, it's really hard to believe that there are only three developers that do everything in Obsidian. Give tabs a try and see how you can incorporate them into your workspaces. Watch this space. The theme in my Patreon vault at the beginning of the video is Sanctum (light mode) and the one for my main vault is Minimal (dark mode). In this video I showed the core functionality Tabs, the core plugin Workspaces and Quick Switcher, and the community plugins Excalibrain and Initiative Tracker. ``` ### Timestamps 00:00 Intro 00:17 How to update 01:27 Introducing Tabs for Obsidian 05:57 Stacked tabs 08:27 Panes vs. windows vs. tabs 09:30 How tabs work with workspaces 13:11 Other changes - Themes ## Post-production - [x] Create captions using Rev, then edit them. - [x] Take a thumbnail photo and create one for YouTube (1280 x 720). - Add description. - [x] Include the title and any keywords in the first few sentences, but in a natural way. - [x] Add related videos and resources as links. - [x] Add end screen. - [x] Add cards if necessary. - [x] Add chapters/timestamps for YouTube if longer than 5 minutes. - [x] Add mid-roll ads/check monetization settings. - [x] Post video preview on Patreon. - [x] Post video preview for YouTube channel members. - [ ] Schedule on YouTube. - [ ] Add video to relevant playlist(s), or create a playlist if necessary. - [ ] Promote on Twitter/LinkedIn as appropriate. - [ ] Create a blog post on [site](https://nicolevanderhoeven.com). - [ ] Add to weekly newsletter. - [ ] Add to video-database. - [ ] Add to other notes in my vault as appropriate.
