Creating Databases in Obsidian (47/100) 2. ==Real use case for Obsidian with Dataview and Database Folder== (100/100) 3. Obsidian Databases (46) 4. Databases in Obsidian (22) ### Hook > [!NOTE] Note to Eve > `Videos/A-roll/A6600/C0002.MP4` I use Obsidian for everything: work, play, and everything in between. In fact, I don't even close Obsidian unless I'm shutting down my computer. So in this video, I'm going to show you a very real-life example of how I would problem-solve in Obsidian, specifically to tackle my burgeoning Kickstarters Backed list. > [!warning] Add this > So in this video, I'm going to show you a very real-life example of how I would problem-solve in Obsidian, specifically to tackle my burgeoning Kickstarters Backed list, using plugins like Dataview, Buttons, QuickAdd, Templater, and Database Folder. Kickstarter is a way to crowdfund your project by talking about what your project is and asking people if they'd like to preorder it. But the problem with Kickstarter is that you pay now, but you may not get the rewards until sometimes years down the track. I don't really have a great way to manage this, and to top it all off, Kickstarter is no longer the only crowdfunding platform. There's Kickstarter, BackerKit, and Indiegogo. I need a way to track all of this in one unified place. And like with most things, my answer to this is Obsidian. Here's what I want to do. > [!NOTE] Note to Eve > If you want some sample Kickstarters for B-roll, you can use these: > - [Orc Borg](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gshowitt/orc-borg-brutal-chaos-powered-by-mork-borg) > - [Planegea](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/atlasgames/planegea) ### Added part > [!warning] Add this > I'm going to create a single Kickstarter database, but then I'm going to show you two different ways to view it. > > One way is to use the Dataview, Buttons, and QuickAdd plugins. These are all plugins that have been around for a while, so this setup is pretty stable, even though it does take a bit more to set up since you're stringing a few plugins together. > > However, if you're looking for a more Notion-like experience, you might prefer the other way, which is to use the plugin called Database Folder. I'll go over both options in this video. ### Structure > [!NOTE] Note to Eve > In this and future videos, could you please add text/animation on the screen with a little plugin icon and the name of a plugin I mention? I get asked this question a lot! I'll try to call out plugins I use so you don't have to guess. - Decide requirements (`Videos/B-roll/OBS/2022-09-05 15-03-50.mp4` 02:16-03:01) - Creating a folder and the template Kickstarter note (`Videos/B-roll/OBS/2022-09-05 15-03-50.mp4` 03:34-07:42) > [!NOTE] Note to Eve > Templater plugin (at 07:17) > - Create QuickAdd macro to add things to it automatically (`Videos/B-roll/OBS/2022-09-05 15-03-50.mp4` 07:59-10:42) > [!NOTE] Note to Eve > QuickAdd plugin (08:17) > > Remove 10:42-18:14 - I made a mistake that I correct later! - Filling out a new project: (`Videos/B-roll/OBS/2022-09-05 15-03-50.mp4` 18:15-19:49) - Write Dataview query to pull in everything with status != "Fulfilled" (`Videos/B-roll/OBS/2022-09-05 15-03-50.mp4` 19:49-23:06) > [!NOTE] Note to Eve > Dataview plugin (20:00) - Timelapse of me filling out the database with other Kickstarter projects (`Videos/B-roll/Quicktime/Screen Recording 2022-09-05 at 16.53.16.mov`) > [!NOTE] Note to Eve > Please put a timelapse of `Screen Recording 2022-09-05 at 16.53.16.mov` briefly, just showing that I went on to fill out more Kickstarter projects. This shouldn't take more than a few seconds. - Show what I did during the timelapse (`Videos/B-roll/OBS/2022-09-26 15-24-50.mp4` 00:00-07:00) - Show [[Crowdfunding Projects Backed]] page - Dataview query: show pending - Dataview query: show by status - Show template - Updated [[Data model]] with new fields. - Add a button to create new Kickstarters (`Videos/B-roll/OBS/2022-09-26 15-24-50.mp4` 07:00-09:27) > [!NOTE] Note to Eve > Buttons plugin (07:17) - Creating databases (`Videos/A-roll/A6600/C0008.MP4` 09:27-11:37) - The way I created this is repeatable: - Create a folder for your database - Create a template for items in that database - Add a Dataview query to list items - Use QuickAdd to automate creating new items - Use Buttons to create an "Add item" button - Show Patreon vault: Database of Stuff (`Videos/B-roll/OBS/2022-09-26 15-24-50.mp4` 11:37-12:55) - A potentially easier way to do all of this: the Database Folder plugin (`Videos/A-roll/A6600/C0008.MP4` 13:38) - Installation and setup (`Videos/B-roll/OBS/2022-09-26 15-24-50.mp4` 15:44-17:21) - Create a folder - perhaps called `formulas` - Install the plugin - In the settings, set `formulas` to by the default formula folder - *Note to Eve: Delete 17:21-19:52* - Turn that folder into a new database folder + add columns, filters (19:52-24:00) - Caveats (`Videos/A-roll/A6600/C0008.MP4` 24:04-26:24) - The formulas error - Performance issues with large vaults/databases - (`Videos/B-roll/OBS/2022-09-26 15-24-50.mp4` 26:26-31:50) - Databases are not as atomic as Dataviews - they can't be embedded into other notes ### Outro (`Videos/A-roll/A6600/C0008.MP4` 31:58+) Having databases in your notes can seem like overkill, and in that case I'd encourage you to keep doing what you're doing. Personally, I've found that database thinking has been helpful in organizing my life. Creating standardized templates for each database helps me stay consistent in my usage of metadata and forces me to consider creating repeatable structures and systems rather than haphazard notes that can't easily be compared or linked to others. If you'd like to learn more about Dataview, check out this video, in which I talk about this awesome plugin and how to use it for your own workflows. *Hvala za ogled!* Thanks for watching. ### Related videos and resources ### Pinned comment ``` Themes used: Minimal (dark) and Sanctum (light).
