I've already shown how I do this for books I read (particularly Kindle books) and for web pages or apps. But if you're watching this video, you may have another source of media that you need to be able to get into your notes as well: YouTube. So this video is going to be about five different ways you can take notes on videos you watch on YouTube. ### Structure - No plugins - Just have the YouTube video up on one screen and your Obsidian note in the other - You can also use iframes. - Media Extended plugin - Works for audio files too - Timestamp Notes plugin - Nice clickable timestamped buttons to go to that portion of the video - YiNote - Stops when you start typing - Exports to Markdown - I've been using YiNote for almost two years. In fact, I've been using YiNote longer than I've been consistently using Obsidian. Here's an article I wrote about using it with Roam Research in 2021. - What's not so great? Manual export to Obsidian. I thought about forking this browser extension and then adding some code to send it to Readwise... but then... - Readwise Reader - Just released - A real "watch it later" service - Uses captions so you can bring in the highlights - Doesn't mark timestamps. ### Outro It doesn't seem so long ago that the only things on YouTube were funny fails compilations and gaming. While those things may still be around, YouTube has become one of the primary ways that I learn: about languages, science, travel, and software engineering. Because of this, having a way to extend the learning and bring some insights from videos I watch into Obsidian is essential for me. If you'd like to learn more about Readwise Reader, check out this video, where I go more in detail about what it is and how to use it. More features have been added to it since that video, such as being able to highlight notes from YouTube videos, but the basics are the same. Thanks for watching! *Agora estou em Portugal!* ### Related videos and resources Video: "I can finally tell you about Readwise Reader" https://readwise.io/nicole ### Pinned comment ``` THEME USED: Atom (light) PLUGINS mentioned: Media Extended, Timestamp Notes, YiNote (browser extension), Readwise Official ``` ### Timestamps 00:00 Intro 00:35 Method 1 - Embed video 02:04 Method 2 - Media Extended plugin 04:43 Method 3 - Timestamp notes plugin 07:01 Method 4 - YiNote browser extension 10:40 Method 5 - Readwise Reader 14:45 Bonus: Readwise Ghostreader ## Post-production - [x] Create captions using Rev, then edit them. - [x] Take a thumbnail photo and create one for YouTube (1280 x 720). - [x] Add description. - [x] Include the title and any keywords in the first few sentences, but in a natural way. - [x] Add related videos and resources as links. - [x] Add end screen. - [x] Add cards if necessary. - [x] Add chapters/timestamps for YouTube if longer than 5 minutes. - [x] Add mid-roll ads/check monetization settings. - [x] Post video preview on Patreon. - [ ] Post video preview for YouTube channel members. - [ ] Schedule on YouTube. - [ ] Add video to relevant playlist(s), or create a playlist if necessary. - [ ] Promote on Twitter/LinkedIn as appropriate. - [ ] Create a blog post on [site](https://nicolevanderhoeven.com). - [ ] Add to weekly newsletter. - [ ] Add to video-database. - [ ] Add to other notes in my vault as appropriate.
