### Title
1. Taking notes on podcasts with Snipd Readwise and Obsidian
### Hook
I've never been one for podcasts, for three reasons.
- *Slow:* The first is that audio is slow: I read quite quickly in English, and listening to something, even at double speed, can feel glacial. There's also no easy way to skim a podcast.
- *Not interactive*: The second is that it's more vague than a video, but still leaves less to the imagination than text-- leaving me fewer opportunities to interact with it.
- *No notes:* The third is that I'd inevitably hear something I wanted to take note of, and there was never a good enough way for me to do so. I *don't* want to have to take notes at my computer (Obsidian plugins), and I *don't* want to have to put up with a medicore podcast player just to do it (Airr).
Yet for the last few months, I've found myself eagerly listening to podcasts... all because I've found a free app that resolves all of these issues. In this video, I'm going to talk to you about that app, called Snipd.
### Structure
- I first heard about Snipd when someone from the team approached me in September last year, asking about the possibility of them sponsoring a video.
- While I've had a good experience with sponsorships in the past, I struggle morally with the conflict of interest they present, so I turned it down.
- However, I did look into the app, and I've been using it on and off for the last ten months. It turns out it's an awesome one.
- This isn't a sponsored video, and they don't have an affiliate program because the app is free. But I'm talking about it anyway, because it's cool.
- Snipd is a podcast player app for iOS and Android with many features, but here are the two that really sold me on it:
- It's AI-powered.
- It syncs with Readwise.
- AI-powered
- Combination of Whisper, ChatGPT, and some other open source modules
- Transcripts
- Request AI transcription if it's not already available
- Snips: title, description
- Takeaways for each moment
- Most highlighted moments
- Chapters
- Share and explore highlights
- AI podcast notes (waitlist)
- Readwise
- Also exports to Markdown
- In Obsidian
- [[Ep. 248 — Decoding Overload]]
- [[Alla Weinberg on Work Culture]]
- Things I wish Snipd did
- Episode summaries for fiction podcasts (they're exploring this, but nothing yet)
- Better takeaways, better transcription, better AI stuff (though it's already pretty good)
- Chapters in Readwise export
- API for developers to extend it (though they are open to doing it themselves)
- Multiple language support (currently English only)
- A business model. (They're currently exploring what a Snipd Premium would look like.)
### Outro
So let's go over the three issues I talked about in the beginning.
- *Slow:* Snipd lets me skim podcasts by providing chapters and showing most highlighted sections.
- *Not interactive:* Switching to Transcript mode gives my brain something else to look at while listening, and also helps me process ideas faster because I'm engaging two senses.
- *No notes:* Snipping is easy and automatically syncs to Obsidian, and the AI podcast notes with takeaways and links to highlights is pretty cool - it's not always perfect, but it gives me a good start for my notes.
It's early days for Snipd, especially since the entire team consists of five people based in Zurich, Switzerland, four of whom are engineers. But after several months of using it, it's an easy recommend for anyone looking to get more out of podcasts.
If podcasts *still* aren't for you and you still prefer YouTube videos, check out this video, where I talk about options for taking notes on YouTube videos. Thanks for watching! *Chelo, melte he!* (==Eve: not sure how to spell this so please don't make a title out it.==)
