Obsidian Templater plugin 2. How to use Obsidian Templater 3. ==Using the Obsidian Templater Plugin== ## Hook In 2021, the Obsidian community awarded the second place in the plugins category to one called Templater, by SilentVoid. Templater has changed the way I take notes, and that's by introducing something we wouldn't typically associate with note-taking: automation. In this video, I'm going to talk about what Templater IS and how I use it to take meeting notes, maintain a database of people I know, and even play tabletop roleplaying games like D&D. ## Structure - What is Templater? - What's the difference between Templates and Templater? - Templates is a copy and paste. TemplateR is more like a copy - process - output. - Templates lets you specify a template and apply it, but the only thing you can put in them that's dynamic is the date and time. - Templater lets you make as much of the template dynamic-- which means you could programmatically change everything about the template, depending on certain conditions. This is so much more than copying and pasting. This makes more sense in the context of an example, so let's get into that. - Templater settings - Use cases - Use default Templater variables - `tp.file.title` - `tp.date.now` - `tp.frontmatter.x` - Examples: [Daily](obsidian://open?vault=vault&file=templates%2Fdaily), [Monthly Review](obsidian://open?vault=vault&file=templates%2Fmonthly) - Bind templates to hotkey - Create files with template when they're in specific folders - Example: [[Person]] - - Run user functions (JavaScript) - [[ttrpgs/The Slayers Five/World]] World page - Session page - Frontmatter - If you're thinking that this is a lot of work to set up and you just want to download everything I've shown you here, join my Patreon and you'll get a copy of a sort of Min/Maxer's Boilerplate vault, with all the plugins and templates and settings in it for the goals and reviews, meetings and people, and TTRPG workflows I showed here. ## Outro Automating my note-taking with Templater does two things: one, it saves me time by doing everything for me; and two, it helps me keep my notes consistent with each other by giving me a repeatable structure to work from. I said earlier that Templater placed SECOND place in the Obsidian Gems of the Year 2021. Any guesses on which one won first place? That would be Dataview, another powerful and initially overwhelming plugin. Thanks for watching, everyone!
