I already spoke Dutch. - I chose Maastricht because I wanted to learn more Dutch. - Act II: Moving to the Netherlands - [Maastricht Centraal] - Timelapse - Zoom, medium, wide - This is the train station. When we first came here, I was eager to get my citizenship. I was told by Rob's family that I shouldn't be able to get my Dutch citizenship and keep my other citizenships. - Favorite stops - [Dadawan] - Pokémon at [Douwe Egberts] - That first year was really hard. I also had to do taxes, but for some reason the form for people who moved into or out of the Netherlands in the last year was: - 80 pages long, with a 120-page explanation - entirely in Dutch - analog only. No digital version - [Hoogbrugstraat] - We rented an apartment on this street for a year. The owner of the apartment was really invasive and judgmental. She entered the apartment while we weren't there, questioned why we had the heater on so high (even though we were paying for it), berated us Australians for not knowing we had to fill up the water during winter, and made the experience unpleasant enough that in the end, we paid three months' rent (4500 €) just to leave that place early. Not a great start. - [Moge Thee] - [Main street] - All the parades happen here, especially for Carnaval. It was really fun to be in the center of everything - [Bridge area] - Maastricht is where the EU was founded in the Treaty of Maastricht. It's named after the river Maas, and is a border town - 3 km from Belgium, 30 from Germany. I love it. - [Town Hall] - I came here on a work visa, a skilled migrant visa. - I spoke Dutch before I got here, but I dramatically improved my Dutch. I passed the NT2 II test, which qualifies me to study in the Netherlands with Dutch as the primary language. - I got my citizenship here inside this building. I cried. - [Vrijthof] - This is the main town square where everything happens. Rob shops here. - ? - We bought a house here. Instead of hiring translators, I increased my Dutch lessons and read through the contracts myself. - A few days later, I learned that the tax arrangement I was on, which when I came was for 7 years, had been shortened to 5. - ? - A year ago I started a company here, to accept payments for my day job. I tried to hire an accountant, but they tried to take advantage of me by increasing prices and claiming that I'd need to spend thousands to do my taxes on my own, and that it was impossible. I do all the taxes for me, my husband, and my company. - For the most part, we try to do everything in Dutch. Here's a blog post I wrote entirely in Dutch. - Act III: Finish - I've been told in passing that I'm not "really" Dutch. - I've been told it's a good thing the 30% ruling is being shortened because they don't need more foreigners in the Netherlands. - (story of Heer Klootzak) - I really love Maastricht, more than I've ever loved any city. But this year, I'm moving out of the Netherlands. - I know not everyone shares these views. - The reality is that when you're a migrant, and you've learned a language, gotten a job, passed the citizenship tests, voted, bought a house, paid taxes, celebrated holidays, and you're still told you're not Dutch enough, it's hard not to feel like you'll never belong. - Goodbye for now, Maastricht. Goodbye for now, Nederland. ## Outro ## Related videos and resources ## Timestamps 0:00 Intro ## Pre-production - [ ] Take a thumbnail photo and create one for YouTube (1280 x 720). - [ ] Add description. - [ ] Include the title and any keywords in the first few sentences, but in a natural way. - [ ] Add related videos and resources as links. - [ ] Add end screen. - [ ] Add cards if necessary. - [ ] Add video to relevant playlist(s), or create a playlist if necessary. - [ ] Create captions using Descript or using the script, then edit them. - [ ] (For k6 videos) Send Floor thumbnail and video link for promotion. - [ ] Add chapters for YouTube if longer than 5 minutes. - [ ] Schedule on YouTube. ## Post-production - [ ] Promote on personal social media. - [ ] Twitter - [ ] LinkedIn - [ ] Create a blog post on [nicolevdh.com](http://nicolevdh.com) - [ ] Include in a weekly newsletter.
