## Hook
If you could travel, explore a new culture, and eat delicious food all while earning 18,000 € a year MORE than your current salary, would you do it?
When we think about improving our finances, we often think about increasing our income-- that means negotiating a raise, starting a side hustle, or even working a second job. But income is only one side of the equation. The other side is expenses.
Reducing your expenses can have just as big an effect on your quality of life as increasing your income. So let's talk about something that has a huge impact on expenses: where you live.
## Intro
Hi, I'm Nicole van der Hoeven, and I've lived long term in five countries over four continents. Normally, on this channel, I talk about different ways I min/max my life, including how I use digital tools like Obsidian, but in this video, I'm going to talk about how I increased my quality of life, decreased my cost of living, and even met my husband-- all by moving countries.
## Structure
- My story
- This topic is something extremely important for me. I'm only talking about the financial sides in this video, but being multinational in many aspects is an essential part of my general philosophy on life.
- the Philippines > US > Australia > the Netherlands > Portugal
- I increased my net worth significantly, and that was definitely helped along by the decisions I made about where to live
- Ways that moving can decrease your expenses
- Lower taxes
- on sources of income:
- salary
- dividends and other investments
- capital gains and cryptocurrency
- pension
- Hypothetical situation
- Portugal: 54k, vs Australia: 72k. That's an 18k difference a year, or 1500 a month.
- Aside: Why the heck am I moving to Portugal?
- Because the data I showed you was not including any tax arrangements. WITH tax arrangements and other deductions, the NL and PT actually look more like this. These countries are making it more appealing for people to migrate to them and stimulate their economies.
- Lower cost of living
- How do you move to another country?
- Study - exchange programs
- Work - including work abroad
- Family
- Investment
- Is it ethical?
- You get to decide for yourself
- Personally, I don't have a problem with paying for taxes. That's why I haven't considered living in actual tax havens, where you pay NO taxes.
- I am in a part of my life where I'm not even sure which country I'll end up staying in, so I just don't want to pay a lot in taxes to a country I'm only passing through. Maybe that will change when I decide to "settle down" in a country.
## Outro
While this video has been all about money, money isn't everything, and there are a lot more factors to consider before you decide to move. MY primary reason for travelling is to genuinely experience and participate in different cultures from all over the world. That means actually understanding what it means to be a local, sharing their values, respecting their traditions, and even learning their language.
Living in another country questions your beliefs like nothing else. If you want to learn more about how you can leverage geographic arbitrage to live more fully, check out this video that I made on flag theory.
Ich hoffe, das Video hat euch gefallen. Tschüss!
