The ice phase spider is a creature that we first encountered in [[50_20210207 The Phase Spider]] when one began to harrass innocent people right outside the [[Hall of Justice]] in [[Neverwinter]].
## Characteristics
- Seems to be attracted to fire, probably because fire heals it
- Could simply be territorial and attempting to lay eggs somewhere safe?
- It might be related to the [[Assassin of the Black Bolt]]. Both displayed ice-based powers.
- Attracted to the sound of a bell.
- Deposits its eggs somewhere after it feeds.
- It seems particularly attracted to fey creatures: gnomes, elves, and eladrins. Most of its victims are of those races.
## Ice phase spider vs phase spider
It differs from a typical [[Phase spider]] in a few ways:
- It is visibly covered in frost/ice that serves as a sort of armor.
- It is carrying weird ice-covered balls that, when the ice melts off them, turn out to be peach-like eggs with many unborn spiderlings inside them.
- It can confuse prey as part of its melee basic attack.
According to [[Ka'ira]], something froze this spider and it somehow survived and adapted to it.
## Movement and size
It's 5 x 5 x 13 squares big, and it has a reach of 3.
It seems to have regular movement (5 or 6 squares), but it can teleport as a minor action, which means it can surprise its prey. However, this ice variety seemed to be more visible than the usual phase spider.
## HP
It wasn't bloodied after taking about 45 damage.
## Defenses
| Defense | Value |
| --------------------- | ----------------- |
| [[Reflex Defense]] | 18 |
| [[Fortitude Defense]] | 20 |
| [[Will Defense]] | 19 |
| [[Armor Class]] | variable, but >17 |
| Damage Reduction | starts at 9? |
When the ice phase spider is hit successfully, the following things happen:
- its DR is reduced
- one of its eggs falls
- its Reflex improves by 1
- its Movement improves by 1
### Phasing
As a fey creature, it has the ability to phase in and out of this plane.
#### Solid
While solid, the ice phase spider is opaque and part of the [[Prime Material Plane]].
- It takes full damage from attacks
#### Incorporeal
While incorporeal, the ice phase spider turns slightly translucent.
- It takes half damage from all damage dealt to it.
## Vulnerabilities and Resistances
### Vulnerabilities
Vulnerable 10 to cold damage. However, when it gets hit with cold damage:
- its aura increases by 2 squares
- the area around it becomes heavily obscured and probably has a higher penalty to attacks that try to hit it
- probably increases its [[Armor Class]]
- vulnerable to melee
### Resistances
- Immune to radiant (but this disappears when its exoskeleton is not iced over)
- Immune to fire damage AND heals it.
- Physical/melee damage it receives is reduced to 0 when phasing
- Immune to lightning
## Attacks and damaging abilities
### Blizzard Aura
A localized storm appears around the phase spider. The size of the aura depends on whether it's received cold or fire damage, but it starts off at range 2. Creatures that start a turn in its aura:
- suffer an attack vs. [[Fortitude Defense]] that deals cold damage.
- If it hits, target is restrained and blinded from the blizzard (save ends).
- can be slid two squares
- cannot take reactions (including opportunity attacks)
In addition, all ranged or melee attacks (not including area attacks) get a -2 penalty to hit the spider due to poor visibility.
### Absorb warmth
The spider draws in warmth from those around it.
- Burst 5 vs [[Fortitude Defense]].
- Deals ~15 necrotic damage
- Drains one healing surge from all affected.
- weakened, attacks deal half damage
After the attack, some of the ice covering its eggs melts, exposing them. The number of eggs uncovered might be equal to the number of targets it is able to affect with this ability.
Its [[Armor Class]] (now Damage Reduction) also reduces after absorbing warmth.
### Opportunity attack
Bite for about 22 damage, and it can confuse.
## Possible strategies for killing it
- Damage its eggs
- Attack it only when it's corporeal
- Don't use: fire, cold, radiant, lightning
- Stop it from moving, and then hit it from afar
