# The Netherese The Netherese are a powerful race of wizards that had abilities that are rumored to have been their undoing. After they were wiped out mysteriously, the god [[Mystra]] put limits in place so that nobody could ever become as powerful as they were. ![[74_20210606 Back to the Tower#^b8a24e]] [[Netheril]] is the name of an ancient city (perhaps one that the Netherese came from) that I read about in [[04_20200926 Research in the Temple of Oghma]]. ## The hubris of the Netherese Despite their accomplishments, they were not content with their level of magic. They tore into The Weave. Foremost among them was Karsius, one of the most powerful, ambitious, and forward-thinking. he was the first to create tenth-level spells. As they tried a greater spell to bring more power to the empire, The Weave collapsed. All magic in Faerun unravelled. All of their cities that were floating crashed into the ground. One city in particular was called Shade Enclave. The mages were able to shunt that into Shadowfell to save it, and it wasn't heard of again. Meanwhile, the rest of the cities fell with all their magics unravelled. As far as we know, they're dead. Almost all of that empire was destroyed because Karsius's folly. Ballads are written about him and how he destroyed the empire. ## Cities The Netherese used to live in cities on top of mountains, for seclusion and security. Their discovery of [[Mithalar]]s allowed them to detach cities from mountains and cause them to float.
