The Spellplague is a magical disease that spread through the land of [[Faerûn]] in 1385 DR (the Year of the Blue Fire), destroying [[The Weave]] from which magic comes. It is said that the Spellplague was caused by the gods [[Shar]] and [[Cyric]], who killed [[Mystra]], the goddess of magic, and unleashed wild magic. ## Effects of the Spellplague People afflicted by the Spellplague are called [[Spellscarred]]. They sometimes die or fall ill, but some are able to control the Spellplague and gain certain abilities. ### Creatures - Creatures afflicted by the Spellplague become deformed monsters with blue and Radiant-based abilities. - The Spellplague is marked by blue fire around land and people it has infected. - People touched by the Spellplague were changed. - The original victims were horribly deformed. - Those who learned to live with the scars do not have deformities or abilities that equal those of the original victims. ### Places - Landscape was changed - Weird towers and spires appeared - Chasms appeared. In [[Neverwinter]], the [[ttrpgs/Order of the Wandering Mind/Mount Hotenow eruption]] created [[The Chasm]], unleashing the spellplague underneath the city. - [[Plaguelands]] and [[Earthmote]]s were created. Earthmotes began to gravitate off the ground and into the air. - A new continent appeared after the Spellplague, one that [[Neverwinter]] traded with. - [[Neverwinter]] was at its height, with about 20,000 inhabitants. Mainly exporting mines from nearby dwarven settlements and crafts - things that Neverwintans made. Especially the water clocks of Neverwinter. It's an expression: "by the clocks of Neverwinter". Many skilled workers. They import materials from other cities (especially [[Waterdeep]]) and they trade by the sea. Also a note about trading with a continent that wasn't there before the Spellplague. - In [[Neverwinter]], the [[Cloak Tower]] disappeared, along with the wizards of [[The Order of the Many-Starred Cloaks]]. Then, six months later, it reappeared, empty. ### Gods and cosmos - The number of gods decreased, as they were also weakened either directly by the Spellplague or by infighting that was caused by it. - Magic changed - The way it was accessed also had to change, and wizards had to re-learn how to cast spells. - Magic-centered cities like [[Calimshan]] and [[Thay]] collapsed. - Connection between planes was damaged - Fey and shadow creatures appeared near [[Neverwinter]] - Neverwinter adjusted to the earthmotes. Before the Spellplague, there was an orc invasion that was repelled by an unprecedented gathering of the races. [[Ban Alagondar]], son of [[Nash Alagondar]]. [[Luskan]], [[Waterdeep]], and dwarven cities beyond the mountains were assailed by the orcs. Neverwinter was one of the farthest settlements reached. Right after the Spellplague, there were increasing reports of fey creatures on the outskirts of Neverwinter and shadow creatures that had never been seen in this world before, and demonic creatures. They don't know what the cause is, but it was probably the Spellplague and how it changed the connection between planes. - [[Feywild]] and [[Evermeet]] were shifted into the [[Prime Material Plane]], and powerful archmages tried to bring their city back closer to their gods, to [[Arvandor (plane)]]. Now, Evermeet exists in three places. ## The [[Spellscarred]] ## Things Xio maybe shouldn't know - Some countries are gone, such as in regions south of the [[Sea of Fallen Stars]]. - The cosmos was changed. - Flesh, stone, magic, space, and dimensional walls were affected. - Some ancient realms thought gone (like [[Feywild]]) returned, and planes (like [[The Abyss]]) shifted to a new cosmic structure. - [[Abeir]], [[Toril]]'s twin world, fused partly with Toril. Parts of [[Faerûn]] were exchanged with the landmasses on Abeir, taking people with them. A new continent appeared on Toril, called [[Returned Abeir]]. - An enormous opening into [[The Underdark]] opened south of [[The Chondalwood]], making the Underdark more accessible to surface-dwellers. - [[Szass Tam]], tyrant of [[Thay]], the former land of the Red Wizards, transformed Thay into a land teeming with undead in his attempt to make himself immortal. - The ancient empire of [[Netheril]] was restored. [[The Twelve Princes of Shade]] rule from their capital city, [[Shade Enclave]], in the [[Anauroch Desert]]. Netheril now threatens the northern realms. - The [[Eladrin]] returned to Faerûn when the [[Feywild]] returned. "Elven" now typically refers to both eladrin and elves. - Most portals were destroyed when [[The Weave]] was destroyed, taking with it the arcane knowledge that the portals relied on. - The [[Calimemnon Crystal]] shattered, releasing the djinn [[Calim]] and the efreet [[Memnon]] to resume their rivalry.
