# [[045_20220412 Who watches the Watchers]]
## Session Summary
> [!abstract] [[045_20220412 Who watches the Watchers]]
>
> Xenia and Wally stalled and diverted Lady Floella's and Oremid Hass's attention elsewhere while Reya, the tiefling, and I cleaned out the safe and climbed out of the window in the southeastern corner of the Hemsworth Mansion. Oremid displayed an interest in helping Xenia develop his arcane abilities, dangling the possibility of Xenia eventually discovering how to prolong his life. Oremid also determined that the real Lady Crowforth died three hours ago, before she "won" Floyd.
>
> The three of us snuck around the eastern side of the garden, just barely managing to avoid Crownsguard but coming upon a dead end at a small temple to Bahamut. We attempted to climb the wall, but _some_ of us (me) failed spectacularly and are left somewhat hanging in the wall in embarrassment.
>
> Wally and Xenia, after being warned telepathically by the tiefling, also began to make their way to the wagon. After some Crownsguard that appeared in our way, Wally convinced them that we were all under orders by the Lady Floella to seek her son.
>
> I did a Sending to Floyd asking him where he was, but the only answer I got back was a cough. We returned to the Crossed Pikes instead, where a woman with silver braids left us a message to meet her downstairs. She turned out to be Telva, a member of an organization called Augen Trust, whom she said "watched the Watchers" of the Dwendalian Empire. She had a suspicion that one of the tribes in Shadycreek Run was being paid off by someone in the Empire, and she (and the Augen Trust) wanted to root out corruption.
>
> We showed her the letter from the slaver named "IJ", and she said she believed that the J stood for Jagentoth. She asked us to provide evidence that money from the Empire is flowing to the Jagentoth family. She also said she believed that Floyd was en route north to the Jagentoths, and that he was in grave danger.
>
> Xenia identified the magic items we got from the heist, and realized that the book, which was full of numbers, probably required the book _The meditations of Pelor the Dawnfather_.
>
> We take a long rest and hit Level 6! ^summary

## Recap of last session

## Log
> [!NOTE]- What would Wally do?
> As far as what Wally would do- gather everyone up and get to the wagon ASAP. Then try to take up the trail to find and rescue that crowns guard asshat. Without dying or getting thrown in jail. Have a great session. And most of all have fun.
Xenia tells Lady Floella that he cast a spell on the [[Bene]] to confess specifically to her... so Lady Floella needs to be there. She says he's already being taken to [[The Umber Dungeon]]. But Xenia convinces her to go after them. He also thought that the Crownsguard that took the halfling away might even have been part of the halfling's troupe too. Xenia succeeds in getting her away.
[[Headmaster Oremid Hass|Oremid Hass]] displays interest in helping Xenia learn more. He suggested he might be able to help Xenia prolong his life. He said Xenia should consider reaching out to [[ttrpgs/Temporary White Circle/The Cerberus Assembly|The Cerberus Assembly]]. Xenia tells Oremid that he cast _suggestion_. Oremid says he might be able to locate the person that took Floyd.
Lady Crowforth is missing an earring and she has green foam in the corner of her mouth.
I give the quill, scroll, book to Reya. The tiefling comes into the study. Reya finds a window in the southeastern corner of the bedroom. She also finds a canvas sack. It seems empty. She tosses everything I gave her into the canvas sack.
I get 1 platinum piece and the ring from the safe. Reya takes the rest.
- bone whistle
- 199 platinum
- marble elephant figurine
She puts the rest in the sack. The three of us head out of the window, narrowly missing some Crownsguard. Milla sends a message to Wally to meet us at the wagon.
Wally and Xenia are told by Oremid that the body of [[Lady Crowforth]] died three hours ago.
Oremid Hass hears Reya failing her stealth as we climbed out of the window and suggests that the Crowsguard check the eastern garden. A Crownsguard pushes on a the wall in the hallway and comes out of the bookcase on the other side of the foyer.
We sneak out around to the top right side of the map and see a temple of Bahamut. Reya and Scura climb the wall (badly) but I totally fail and am hanging by my pack on the fence. Reya disguises self into a Crownsguard.
Xenia and Wally come and Wally convinces the Crownsguard that we're all together and that we were told by Lady Floella to follow Floyd. They believe him, and say the cart headed east, towards where Lady Crowforth lives anyway. We get on the cart.

#sending to [[ttrpgs/Temporary White Circle/The Gentleman|The Gentleman]]:
> I got the book, but the halfling you sent botched the job and confessed he was working for you! I will be in touch.
^051028
Response:
> I am rather unimpressed. I hear you botched the job. I await your explanation.
^239b0e
#sending to [[Floyd Hemsworth]]:
> Where are you? Crowforth is not real. Where are you going? Are you safe?
^48bec4
In answer, Floyd just coughs. ^4b6586
I go to get stuff in my room. The rest of the party, who are in [[Kalani]]'s room, see a piece of paper slipped under the door. _Fighting pit. 10 minutes._ Someone with a purple cloak that looked like mine left it, but I don't follow.
Kalani is fighting a guy with Viking braids.
Reya spots someone who was at her table at [[The Hemsworth Charity Auction]]. Silver braids.
![[twc-telva.png]]
She was seated at the same table as Reya and Lady Crowforth. She's the one who slipped the note under Kalani's door. She's female, human, in her late 30s. About 37. Her name is [[Telva Cornwrath]]. She offers to buy us food, and she seems to know each of us. She calls the tiefling "Karmilla" and seems very interested in what we think of the Dwendalian Empire and the Crownsguard. "Who watches the Watchmen?" ^68b839
She is with [[The Augen Trust]]. I don't really know who that is, but Xenia does. They are a clandestine spy network, like an MI5 or CIA. She called Wally "Wally" even if the placecards at the ball said "Walter".
She wants information about a place that is politically difficult and dangerous for her to go. If we are successful, we will gain favour and payment. If we're unsuccessful, she will disavow any knowledge of us. She believes (the Augen Trust) that one of the tribes/families in the [[Shadycreek Run]] is receiving money from the Empire. She suspects corruption and needs evidence. She thinks Floyd might have been taken by them or is caught up somewhere. She thinks he's been taken towards Shadycreek Run. ^ae3e5a
Reya tells her we've encountered a cult that had chopped up hands.
We show her the letter with "IJ". She confirms it stands for "[[ttrpgs/Temporary White Circle/The Jagentoth Family|Jagentoth]]". She needs us to provide evidence that money from the Empire is flowing to the Jagentoth family. She says that if Floyd is in the hands of the cult, his life is in grave danger.
[[Franz]], Kalani's uncle, is the one downstairs. Telva says that if we want to get in contact with her, we should tell Franz.
Reya recognises the ring. It is an identical ring to what she's wearing. It was her ticket to get in as "the granddaughter of the duke Winterson".
What's magical, from Xenia's detect magic
- quill: Quill of Scribing (slightly modified)
- scroll
- elephant figurine
- canvas bag
> [!tip]- Quill of Scribing
>
> Wondrous item, common (requires attunement)
>
> This quill is fashioned from the feather of some exotic beast, often a giant eagle, griffon, or hippogriff. When you take an action to speak the command word, the quill animates, transcribing each word spoken by you, and up to three other creatures you designate, onto whatever material is placed before it until the command word is spoken again, or it has scribed 250 words. Once used, the quill can’t be used again for 8 hours.
> [!tip]- Scrolls of Correspondence
> Scroll, common
>
> These vellum scrolls always come in pairs. Anything written on one scroll also appears on the matching scroll, as long as they are both on the same plane of existence. Each scroll can hold up to 75 words at a time. While writing on one scroll, you are aware that the words are appearing on a paired scroll, and you know if no creature bears the paired scroll. The scrolls don’t translate words written on them, and the reader and writer must be able to read and write the same language to understanding the writing on the scrolls.
>
> While holding one of the scrolls, you can use an action to tap it three times with a quill and speak a command word, causing both scrolls to go blank. If one of the scrolls in the pair is destroyed, the other scroll becomes nonmagical.
Words were being written from somewhere else (the partner scroll), appearing on the scroll, and the quill was writing them in the book.
[Figurine of wondrous power](https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/5413-figurine-of-wondrous-power) - marble elephant.
The canvas bag is a smuggler's bag.
> [!tip]- Smuggler's Bag
> Wondrous item, common
>
> This leather-bottomed, draw-string canvas bag appears to be a sturdy version of a common sack. If you use an action to speak the command word while holding the bag, all the contents within shift into an extradimensional space, leaving the bag empty. The bag can then be filled with other items. If you speak the command word again, the bag’s current contents transfer into the extradimensional space, and the items in the extradimensional space transfer to the bag. The extradimensional space and the bag itself can each hold up to 1 cubic foot of items or 30 pounds of gear.
"Let me show you" is the command phrase of the bag. Reya says it, and stinky working clothes that are halfling-sized show up.
In the book
- Mundane journal entries
- Several pages in numbers. It seems to be in different handwriting.
We need to get _The meditations of Pelor, the Dawnfather_! It contains the cipher for the book.
