Say something in any way that you can, as soon as you can. This world looks a lot like our world in 1907, except for magick. It's always bad, mighty, and has negative consequences. Anything magickal emanates [[Bleed]], which is magical radioactivity. We know that [[Oldfaire]] was the older city that [[ttrpgs/The Great Dark/Newfaire|Newfaire]], where we live now, was built on top of. Oldfaire drowned in magick. If you grew up in Newfaire, you probably think magick doesn't exist. If you grew up in the outer [[ttrpgs/The Great Dark/The Fairelands|Fairelands]] (like [[Tottergrass]]), you may have been exposed to magick. [[ttrpgs/The Great Dark/Candela Obscura|Candela Obscura]] is an organisation that confronts manifestations of magick and containing them. Most people don't know about it. There are Candela lighthouses throughout the world. We're new recruits to Candela. This is our side job. We only do this at nights and still do our day jobs as covers. We were given classes where we learned about Bleed and [[The Fourth Pharos]]. The Fourth Pharos is like the fourth iteration of a warehouse of magickal items (like Warehouse 13). The land around the previous Pharos got incredibly corrupted. With the Fourth Pharos, they made it beyond [[The Flare]] and used [[Astrolabe]] devices to protect it from the rest of the magickal world around it. We won't know *why* this campaign is called [[The Great Dark]] for a while. There will be "spaceflight", but it's like Jules Verne spaceflight. They haven't actually quite left the atmosphere yet. People have started to say "The Great Dark take you" to say "go to hell". But people don't actually know what it means. It's not *illegal* to be part of Candela Obscura because it supposedly doesn't exist. Governing bodies: - [[The Primacy]]: political - [[The Ascendancy]]: religious - [[ttrpgs/The Great Dark/The Periphery|The Periphery]]: cops - Candela has probably tussled with them quite a bit - They have guns One interesting thing about Candela Obscura is that the GM only ever reacts to players. They only do bad things if players roll and roll poorly. [[Calliope Nightshade]] - went to journalism school but now gets information for private clients - I had a case where I came across magick-- my last case was to retrieve a family heirloom that turned out to be magickal. I got sick from it and Candela Obscura operatives took it from me. They helped me get better, injected me with something that put the Bleed past me. - This is a source of power that I want to learn about and learn to wield. - of the [[Silverslip]] Nightshades - government area - she was well-off and entitled - She's a night club singer. - She has some way to disguise herself during the day so she doesn't get recognised. [[Tarrin Bellweather]] - She's from Seasway - Nerve and Intuition, no Cunning - She's terrible around people, very awkward - She does have to go to Newfaire at times - Her parents disappeared when she was about 7. She's always wanted to know what happened to them. That's why she joined Candela Obscura. She went to Everhollow Lighthouse and found a fissure (Thinning) there and she saw something moving and alive there. She was mesmerised and it sucked her in. Just as she was about to go through, the Lightkeeper pulled her back. the Lightkeeper became a mentor and sent her on expeditions to collect things. - She volunteered to be a new member just now, but she's been familiar with Candela Obscura for a while. - She doesn't know this yet, but the Lightkeeper was really making use of her to do some very dangerous work towards the end. She didn't really want to tell people about her. Others from Candela Obscura found out and didn't like it-- they thought she should really be receiving training. - ![[co2-tarrin.png]] [[Birdie Campbell]] - She is the proprietor of [[Brewed Enlightening Teas and Coffees]]. - She's had an experience that she can't explain. What she knows is that she was found left for dead at the [[Sacred Ascension Cemetery]]. She was alive, but there was a gap in her memory. She remembers a face but when she tries to remember more, there's just static. It could be something mundane or magickal. This happened when she was a kid. - Occultist. She's like a lapsed Catholic-- she goes back to [[The Ascendancy]] church for major holidays but not on a daily basis. She attunes more to folklore. She's superstitious. - She gives wards to people or keeps them for herself. - She's in her 30s. - About six months ago, there was something in the papers about a new gang in Newfaire that would take a bank hostage and steal one thing from it. The Red Hand was talking about it because they were muscling in on The Red Hand's territory. Other people called them The Phoenix Gang. Birdie always had an inkling that the Phoenix Gang looked like this eldritch gang she had had as patrons. She kept her mouth shut. - Then another group, not the cops, approached her and said they wanted to talk to the group because they're in over their heads with magickal items. It was [[Lightkeeper Jezebel Moore]] who came to her. Jezebel has youth pastor vibes-- always friendly. Can anyone be that nice? She's the one that said that Birdie should join Candela Obscura. - The Phoenix Gang was [[The Phoenix Gang|Circle of Uncut Diamonds]]! - Birdie knows better than to have Circle meetings in her establishment. - ![[co2-birdie.png]] [[Eric Birtwistle]] - He is a young, semi-failed doctor at the start of his career, about 25. - He comes from a long line of doctors after his great-grandfather pioneered a surgical technique, but now Eric doesn't like blood and has to be a GP, not a surgeon. - Someone in his university had a magickal amulet and did really well. Eric has the idea that if he has an item like that, he could do really well in his career too. - This person wasted away and died. Eric's grandmother had always warned against this stuff. So he realised that he needed to know more about this stuff. - Well-connected family - He's the secondborn in the family. He has a more successful older brother. - What Candela Obscura sees is a son of a prominent family that wants to be part of the organisation. - Eric doesn't really need to make a living. He's the only one for whom Candela Obscura is a full-time job. He's very insecure about himself and has a bit of impostor syndrome from being the kind of doctor that attends to the vapors of older women. - ![[co2-eric-birtwhistle.png]] - I met Eric at a charity ball, a fundraising gala. [[Brewed Enlightening Teas and Coffees]] - in [[The Varnish]] but Birdie's family lives in [[The Sidle]]. - The Varnish is where people from Silverslip (which is where people who have made money from working in the government live) go to blow off steam. [[Lightkeeper Jezebel Moore]] is our new Lightkeeper as we form our Circle. Tarrin thinks she got "a friend" in trouble. (Jezebel) - she's in her mid-30s. Jezebel comes to us with an older woman in her 40s that has a black hooded cloak. Madam Fidovich. - Jezebel doesn't call her "Lightkeeper Fidovich"; she calls her "[[Madam Lia Fidovich]]". - Jezebel says that our first mission is to help Madam Fidovich, who lost one of her teams about a year ago and hasn't been able to get together another team (this seems like a sore spot). Our homework for this week: find a place on the map where we want to have a headquarters. There is a way to [[The Fourth Pharos]] there, but Jezebel's the one with the key. Madam Fidovich takes us to [[The Twilight Theatre]], a theatre in [[Red Lamp]] district. - Proprietor: [[Hugo Garcia]] - Talked to people from [[ttrpgs/The Great Dark/The Periphery|The Periphery]]. Strange things have been going on here. People are missing. When asked about what happened, they can't really remember what happened in the theatre. - We're there in between shows. No lights on. - Her team's disappearance happened over a year ago. They're probably not related. This is a different team from what Birdie saw (our last campaign party). - She lectures Birdie about magick being dangerous. - People were taken last night, and a couple of days prior. It doesn't seem to be every night. Candela Obscura is afraid that things like this that happen rarely start to occur more frequently. - She doesn't really want us as bumbling newbies to get in the way of their relationship with the Periphery. She's infuriatingly condescending. - She gives us a card and says that we can leave messages for her there. It's an address. It's a message service. We go into the theatre. Birdie and I go to talk to Hugo Garcia. - harried, balding man, middle age. - It's a burlesque show - The Twilight Theatre: ![[great-dark-twilight-theatre.png]] %% # Text Elements # Drawing ```json {"type":"excalidraw","version":2,"source":"https://github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw-plugin/releases/tag/2.0.25","elements":[],"appState":{"theme":"dark","gridSize":null,"viewBackgroundColor":"#ffffff"}} ``` %%
